San Diego St. Starting Pitcher: RHP Bubba Derby (1-1, 2.96)
Final Score & Box Score: San Diego State 9, Texas Tech 0 (recap and box score)
There’s not a lot to write about for game one, which Texas Tech lost to San Diego State, 9-0 (recap and box score). Ryan Moseley pitched 5 innings, going up 6 runs, 4 earned, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Quinn Carpeter wasn’t good in relief as he pitched 1 inning, giving up 3 hits, 3 runs, all earned and walked 3. The offense only managed 3 hits and there’s not much point mentioning those as they didn’t amount to any runs.
I mentioned last week that the offense needs to get going because it’s not going anywhere at this point. It just appears to be a bit stagnant and without a big hit, there’s not much going on in terms of getting on base and that needs to change in quick order.
Game 2: Saturday, March 14th @ 4:00 pm
Texas Tech Starting Pitcher: TBA
San Diego St. Starting Pitcher: RHP Cody Thompson (1-0, 6.16)
Final Score & Box Score: Texas Tech 11, San Diego State 0 (recap and box score)
Well, this was much better, especially offensive where the bats came out to play and help that pitching staff get out to an early lead. Cameron Smith was fantastic for seven inning and Tyler Neslony went 4 for 5 with a 3 run home run. This is the offense that I was hoping for yesterday as the middle of the infield was huge, as Gutierrez, Neslony and Carpenter all had multi-hit days at the plate. Gutierrez was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, including a home run (his first of the year), Quinn Carpenter was 2 for 5 for the day, scoring 2 runs. At the bottom of the order, Tyler Floyd was 2-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Smith dealt all day long, pitching 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts, moving his record to 2-1 for the year. Dalton Brown pitched the final two frames, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts and game over.
Game 3: Sunday, March 15th @ 3:00 pm
Texas Tech Starting Pitcher: TBA
San Diego St. Starting Pitcher: RHP Mark Seyler (4-0, 3.33)
Final Score & Box Score: Texas Tech 6, San Diego State 3 (recap and box score)
Felt pretty good to get this one as Texas Tech won the third game of the three game series with San Diego State, 6-3, and winning the series 2-1. Dylan Dusek got the start, pitching 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, both earned, walking none and striking out no one. This wasn’t your typical Dusek start, he did throw a ton of pitches for strikes, but that’s fine. Corey Taylor came in and mowed San Diego State down, pitching 4 innings himself, giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and striking out 5 and notching the win. Dominic Moreno got the save, made it interesting, but got the save. The offense didn’t get started until the third inning, where Tyler Floyd singled to center, stole second and then Corey Raley singled to right moving Floyd to third. An error and fielder’s choice on an infield hit by Tanner Gardner moved Raley to second and scoring Floyd. Eric Gutierrez doubled to center scoring Gardner and Raley. Quinn Carpenter doubled to right, scoring Gutierrez and that was really all Texas Tech would need. Texas Tech would get two insurance runs in the eighth and that was it.
College Baseball Central’s Mark West has a fantastic preview of this weekend’s series, where the Red Raiders travel again out West to play San Diego State and avenge the sweep of last week to Cal State Fullerton. And I would totally recommend clicking the link above to see the pinstripe uniforms of SDSU, which are black with red pinstripes. It’s a sight to see. West summarizes the series:
The Red Raiders are out to show the selection committee that they can be a top notch squad outside of the Texas region. Grabbing a road series win against a dynamic and balanced team like the Aztecs won’t be easy. However, the Red Raiders would be happy to just get a win to avoid going 0-for-the-west coast on the year after suffering the sweep last weekend.
San Diego State is already solid in RPI and would benefit from a series win against Tech to help bolster their out-of-conference resume in the eyes of the committee. Keeping the Tech offense from unloading will be challenging but the Aztecs have enough offensive prowess to keep up if things get out of hand.
