A non-transcript of head coach Joey McGuire after the spring game on Saturday.
- Thank you for all of the Red Raiders that came out, Leyton Stone had a huge smile on his face and he said he had come and he finally was able to be a part of the spring game. Good crowd, I forget what a good turnout we had.
- Biggest thing was being healthy, no one was banged up at all. A lot of work to do. Have a long way to go to where we need to be. These guys want to be special.
- The 105 has to be decided before game 1, so we’ll carry between 108 and 110. We’ve had conversations with those on the bubble. We have guys that came to Texas Tech to graduate and play football, that will be our “over 105” for extra bodies and possibly some students who have expressed interest.
- Any concern about place-kicker, surprising because they have been elite in every situation we’ve done. our 2nd scrimmage they kicked a 53 and 54 yard field goal. We will talk to them about, they have to be what’s next. Jack Burgess has the flu which is why we didn’t punt. But Jack is our #1 holder and that affected them a little bit, although I thought the holds were good. They both know what we want to do in the next week, which is look for a combo guy and trying to find that all spring. Stone can rugby kick and Morton can. We are looking for a combo guy. Jason Llewellyn is a good tight end, but he’s an elite deep snapper.
- It’s fun to watch those guys they help each other. Howard Sampson will tell Romello Height what he knew what he was gonig to do by his stance, or how he was set. It’s good to see what we’ve done this spring. We’ll have Scuiry and Hunter Zambrano on offense and Dooda Banks and Joseph Adedire back on defense. Was excited at the end of the game staying ahead of the sticks.
- Receivers have shown up this spring are Terrance Carter and Johncarolos Miller ,their ability to make big plays. Kelby Valsinmoving inside and outside has had 2 good weeks. Leyton Stone made a play in red zone. The redshirt and freshmen, are more in a pro style offense meaning they move around and do different things. The more they do it the more the game will slow down.
- All 3 of the running backs have had big plays, Cam Dickey did it at the end, have done that. Big run plays in prior scrimmage. They are tough, J’Koby Williams is 185, but is tougher and more durable than normal 185 pound guy.
- Will Hammond in the 2 minute drill cannot take a sack, you never hit the in practice and they tend to hold onto the ball longer than they should. They did a better job of speeding things up. He ha to speed up the operation, Ponton had a pre-snap penalty and Ponton has to stay set, but Hammond has to get going into the process of the offense sooner.
- Reggie Vigil has a pinkie toe, same thing as Jaylin Conyer from last year. They put a screw in it, also Terrell Tilmon, they will be ready in mid-June and ready to go. We get to do that stuff fast with the hospital here.
- With the guys we have on defensive line, with Mello, David, Chuck, Cheta, and always look on the bright side. Cheta has had a good last 2 weeks. With the guys we have, we should be able to pressure the quarterback at a higher level. That’s why we added David and asked “what would Philadelphia do”?
- Behren Morton, always good to have a guy take as many snaps as he has. He’s got a great voice in that room and can settle guys down. With the new system he’ll need to acclimate. I talk to quarterbacks different in the spring than in the season, like getting onto Hammond.
- Cole Wisniewski, am excited about that, have a lot of guys who have a lot of experience. Reminds me of Rabbit, extremely intelligent. Cole does a phenomenal job of tackling and getting guys down. Offensively we missed the block on John Curry and he made a good tackle.
- Would be shocked if Tahj Brooks, Caleb Rogers, Jaylin Conyers and Josh Kelly don’t get drafted and McCrae and Tharp should be priority free agents.
- Mitch Griffis moves well in the pocket and runs well. Last year for Wake Forest he threw for 1,600 yards. He probably threw up 30 times before the game (he tested negative). Grand parents came to the game and are form North Carolina.
North Crowley safety Aaron Bradshaw (6-2/185) committed to Texas Tech on Friday evening. Bradshaw had offers from Houston, TCU, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado and Arizona State to name a few.
Recruiting Profiles: Rivals (4-star) | 24/7 Sports (3-star) | On3 (3-star).
Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman spoke with Bradshaw about his commitment:
“When the process started to slow down and it came down to my main choices and where I was being prioritized, that whole staff was a second family to me,” Bradshaw said of the Red Raiders.
“Ever since that visit, I made a special connections with Coach Greene — from the jump. Coach McGuire coached with my coaches here at North Crowley,” he continued. “When It came down who treated me the best — then going on the visit and seeing it all in person, it was 10 times better.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on Saturday’s scrimmage:
Griffis threw two touchdown passes — both showing arm talent into tight windows — to highlight the annual spring game at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders scored five touchdowns in the two-hour scrimmage, and the senior from Ashburn, Virginia, was the only player to have a hand in more than one.
“He’s tough,” Tech coach Joey McGuire said. “He probably threw up 20 times today before the game. We tested him today; didn’t have the flu. His grandparents were here. He’s like, ‘Coach, I’m going. They’re not going to drive all this way to not see me play.’ “
Red Raider Sports’ Ava Hounshell on the spring game:
“I’m always down on one on ones and gravitate to coaching the defensive line and it’s really cool to watch those guys and the way they help each other,” McGuire told the media after the spring game on Saturday. “You’ll see Howard (Sampson) say ‘Romello (Height) I know you’re going to do this just by your stance’ and then vice versa.”
The defensive line was the star of the show on Saturday, with Height, David Bailey, Lee Hunter, and Skylar-Gill Howard leading the starting front four for the majority of the day. As well as Charles Esters (switched in and out with Bailey for starting reps), Braylon Rigsby, Jayden Cofield, and AJ Holmes getting quality reps with the second team.

Despite a strong showing by the defense, the offense managed to find the end zone 4 times today.

A couple of acknowledgements that I’ll link to tomorrow morning. The women’s tennis team won the Big 12 Tournament, which is a huge accomplishment for them. Congrats to all involved. The softball team won 2 of 3 against Arizona on the road and are now 1 or 2 games from winning the Big 12 title outright. Baseball dropped the series against Arizona State, there may have been some funny business going on in game 2 with it being called for rain, but I wasn’t able to follow that closely.
