Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year Nolan Groves (6-5) committed to Texas Tech last night. Groves is a shooting guard and averaged over 34 points a game, 8 boards, and 6 assists a game. Groves was originally committed to Yale decommitted last week and Texas Tech was the first to offer Groves after that decommitment. I’d put 2+2 together on that situation as I am sure they were related.

Groves is unrated by 24/7 Sports and Rivals, which is sort of crazy for a state’s player of the year. You can see the type of player is he below, which is how pretty much every AAU player plays the game, can go inside and finish at the rim with nice handles as well as a good outside shot. I am guessing that the reason why he didn’t have a ton of offers is that maybe some scout didn’t like his athleticism traits, that’s a difficult thing to figure out from this end of a YouTube video, but that’s a pretty decent guess. If Groves can shoot then that will translate and he’s got a dribble-drive game that will keep other teams honest. Defense will maybe be the biggest question.

Just as a reminder, there are 13 scholarship spots available each year so there are 4 more spots to fill. My guess is that a point guard and big-men are on the list from this point forward.
