Pretty big little day. Pretty big little day. We’ll start with the big news, which is that JT Toppin announced his return to Texas Tech. Reports are that he’ll make $4 million, which is more than he’d make in the late first round, which is where he might have been projected. I’m ridiculously excited for Toppin and Anderson, that’s a great start right there.
The second bit of news is the addition of guard Tyeree Bryan (6-5/220) from Santa Clara. Bryan averaged 10.4 points a game, 4.4 boards, 1.6 assists, 0.8 turnovers, 1.1 steals while making 46.3% of his field goals and 42.9% of his 3-point shots. Of all things, he only made 65.3% of his free throws. For the Bronchos, Bryan was one of the best players, a 5.9 box score +/-, the team’s highest offensive rating at 126.7, very low usage rate, meaning he’s scoring without the ball. Very low turnover rate and an elite 3-point shooter. This is a good player that will probably be even better with better players around him. I don’t know that he’ll average more than 10 points, but he’s a shooter and a solid edition.
I should also clarify that guys like Overton, Horner, Yalaho, Akuentok, etc. haven’t necessarily committed to Texas Tech, but I guess I am still considering them to be on the team until I hear otherwise.
Texas Tech assistant coach Luke Barnwell has decided to follow Ben McCollum to Iowa. I wish Barnwell the best unless Texas Tech has to play the Hawkeyes. This does create a bit of an issue as both Barnwell and Matt Braeuer, who was just hired as the head coach at Stephen F. Austin during the tournament run. McCasland will need to find two new assistant coaches in addition to filling out his roster.
