On the Court

There are only a few people in sports that I don’t like and Jamie Dixon is one of them. I’m not proud of it, but I also won’t apologize for it. With that being said . . . Go Buffs.

On the Gridiron

Coy Eakin was given the No. 3 jersey for the offensive side of the ball, to remind you, the No. 3 jersey is in memory of Luke Siegel, the son of the former men’s tennis coach who died tragically in a golf course accident with severe head trauma, and No. 3 was Luke’s favorite number.

“This was not a difficult decision in presenting Coy with our No. 3 jersey,” McGuire said. “Coy has proven his toughness to this team over his time as a Red Raider and has developed into being one of our most-consistent players on the offensive side of the ball. He will be a great representative of that jersey number and what it means to this football program.”

Matt Dowdy is blogging! Yep, if it looks like a blog and smells like a blog it must be a blog. All kidding aside, sort of a practice report from yesterday. Here’s a bit:

“It was good,” McGuire said following the Red Raiders’ first practice. “We probably had eight football schools (walk-through periods), and I felt like we were in a good position as far as getting the offense and defense in. Of course, the first day you’re really fired up and your anxiety goes up and you make a few mistakes that you’re not used to making. It’ll happen again Friday when we put the pads on. I thought the speed of practice was great, and guys got the call on both sides of the ball and played fast.”

Texas Tech will practice again Wednesday afternoon before closing out its opening week of spring ball with an early wake-up call Friday morning. The Red Raiders will take Spring Break off and return their normal three practices per week schedule March 25.

24/7 Sports has one player to watch in the top 25 and here’s the bit about No. 22 Texas Tech:

22. Texas Tech Red Raiders: EDGE Romello Height — As one of the headliners of Texas Tech’s historic transfer portal class, Height brings immense promise to a roster that may compete for a Big 12 crown. He is a key pickup for a team that will square off against countless high-end quarterbacks.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams has a notebook from the first day and this last bit from Lee Hunter when he visited Lubbock as part of UCF’s team:

Defensive tackle Lee Hunter transferred to Tech from Central Florida in January. He started 23 games the past two years, including a 2023 game against Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Asked what he remembered of it, Hunter said, “I got hit with tacos during the game. At halftime, I actually wanted some taco meat with shells. That was just a good memory.”
