Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Preview, how to follow Texas Tech baseball at Las Vegas College Classic

When asked in early February who on a challenging early schedule he most looked forward to facing, Red Raiders catcher Dylan Maxcey said, “I’m just super excited, really, to go to Vegas and play Texas. I think all of us are really excited for that. We’re going to be kind of with a mentality that if we don’t run-rule ’em, then we lost. … And I would say Arizona coming here is going to be pretty cool, really cool and also a very good challenge for us.”

Tadlock mostly downplayed the game against the Longhorns, especially given the Red Raiders have another game before then. Under 20th-year coach Dan Hartleb, Illinois won the Big Ten in 2011, 2015 and 2024. The Fighting Illini were 35-21 last year and 18-6 in the conference.

“Illinois looks like a really good team to me,” Tadlock said. “Some older guys, look pretty physical.”

Texas Tech Baseball dropped game two of the 2025 Las Vegas Baseball Classic Saturday afternoon to No. 15 Texas by a score of 10-5 at the Las Vegas Ballpark.

With the setback, the Red Raiders (2-6) fall to 1-1 at the event, while the 15th-ranked Longhorns (8-1) improve to 2-0.

Turning to sophomore Lukas Pirko, Tech used a 1-2-3 top of the first and a one-out double from Damian Bravo to threaten in the first inning off Texas lefty Luke Harrison.

After a grounder advanced Bravo to third base and a catchers interreference placed runners on the corners, Logan Hughes hit a slow chopper that UT shortstop Jalen Flores fielded and stepped on second one-half step ahead the first base runner, Robin Villeneuve.

With the game scoreless and one man out, it was Flores again who was in the middle of a key turning point, as the infielder ripped a line drive toward the hot corner that TJ Pompey momentarily caught before the ball fell to the ground. Pompey gathered and picked up the ball and fired to first, but Flores was safe by a step.

Las Vegas College Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team selection Damian Bravo went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and hit a home run but Texas Tech dropped its final game of the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic by a score of 12-8 in eight innings Sunday afternoon at the Las Vegas Ballpark.

Bravo went 8-for-15 for the week with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored to raise his average to .429 on the season.

In the setback, Texas Tech (2-7) was limited to just eight chances at the plate as the game was shortened to accommodate Washington’s (4-8) 6:30 p.m. (PT) drop time.
