Softball went 3-2 over the weekend, beating UMass twice and Maryland, while losing to No. 1 Texas both times. The second win over UMass was a perfect game thrown by freshman pitcher Samantha Lincoln. One of the losses to Texas was 2-1, the other 11-0. The 2-1 loss was where Nijaree Canady was in the circle, so a close game for sure. The ladies will be at home starting Thursday for the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
Texas Tech baseball dropped all 3 games to No. 6 North Carolina on Friday and Saturday. The offense only produced 6 runs for the weekend. I’m not going to make any grand declarations, as starting off on the road against a top 10 team isn’t easy. This group will host UC Irvine this weekend.

The Lady Raiders fell to Baylor on Saturday, 66-60 and are 3-11 in Big 12 play and will host Cincinnati on Wednesday.
The NCAA Selection Committee released their top 16 teams with Texas Tech checking in at No. 13 and receiving the 4th seed in the South. This still feels a bit meaningless, but that’s okay, I mean it’s the Selection Committee. Selection Sunday is March 16th, so right around the corner.
On the Gridiron
Pflugerville defensive back Maddox Quiller (6-1/205) committed to Texas Tech last week, a top 100 prospect, as part of the 2026 class.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Stephen Garcia on walk-on quarterback Holden Phillips from Frenship who is an early enrollee who only was able to play quarterback his senior year.
Phillips completed 261 of 349 pass attempts for 4,438 yards, 57 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the 10-2 Tigers. Those were the best marks in school history for completion percentage (74.8%) and passing touchdowns in a single season.
Frenship coach Jay Northcutt said Phillips has a field vision that can’t be taught, along with a high IQ and composure. Northcutt also attributed Phillips’ success to his athleticism and competitiveness as a three-sport standout.
“I think you saw all that wrapped into one,” Northcutt said, “which just made a really special player at that position.”
