Usually at some point in the basketball season there’s a bit of a break, but not this year. And so I don’t have a ton of time to breathe and sort of figure out what the content will look like. From a football perspective I will be taking a look at the Mack Leftwich offense and the Shiel Wood defense. I am less confident about finding things on the Wood defense, but we’ll see. And I think that I’m going to stay the course with sticking to Morning Stakes and basketball previews and post-game write-ups until we get through with March. Besides, that’s about the time that spring football will start so there will be plenty of content through the spring leading us into summer, especially with what I think will be improved baseball and softball teams. I’ve also been hesitant to mention this, but on Sunday, February 23rd will be the 10-year anniversary of Staking The Plains. This sort of snuck up on me and I honestly had no idea it’s been 10 years. It hasn’t felt that long, but here we are.

College Poll Tracker tracks where Texas Tech was ranked this week by the AP voters, 12th in this week’s Top-25 AP Poll, moving up a spot.

CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson grades the year-3 hires in college football and head coach Joey McGuire gets a B-, which I think is fair.
It’s been a really solid start for McGuire’s tenure at Texas Tech. His Red Raider teams have gone to three bowl games and compiled a 16-11 record against Big 12 opponents. We have yet to see him hit a program peak or experience a breakthrough season or moment, with no top-3 finishes in the Big 12 standings and not even a single appearances in the AP Top 25, but he’s got a great reputation on the recruiting trail. His outstanding recent portal haul has created a buzz around the program heading into 2025.
