On the Diamond
No. 10 Texas Tech softball notches their first win of the season with a 2-0 win over Marshall. They will play No. 25 Mississippi State and Penn State today and 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
On the Court
CBS Sports’ Kyle Boone has his power rankings and has Texas Tech at #5 (which seems aggressive):
I bumped Texas Tech into the Power Rankings last week after a hot stretch and the Red Raiders rewarded my faith with wins over Houston and Baylor. Grant McCasland has something special brewing in Lubbock with a star-studded trio of Chance McMillian, JT Toppin and Darrion Williams leading the way. Last week: No. 15
NCAA’s Andy Katz has his Power 37 and has Texas Tech at #10:
Texas Tech (Prev. 27, 17-4): Time to give the Red Raiders the respect they deserve after beating Houston without JT Toppin and Grant McCasland.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello has his power rankings (we might be at peak power ranking) and has Texas Tech at #10:
Given the circumstances surrounding Tech’s win at Houston this past Saturday — on the road, with the objectively ridiculous ejections of JT Toppin and coach Grant McCasland — there’s a strong case to be made that it was the most impressive win of any team this season. The Red Raiders then avoided a letdown by following the statement win up with a 14-point victory over Baylor on Tuesday. That’s now seven wins in a row for Texas Tech.
Keep an eye on Toppin, though. He went down in the first half with an injury, and though he returned in the second half, he played only eight minutes.
Next seven days: at Arizona (Feb. 8), vs. Arizona State (Feb. 12)
On3’s Griffin McViegh on the story of Indiana and Mike Woodson partying ways by the end of the season and who Indiana might hire. You can guess that Grant McCasland’s name was brought up, but it was Chris Beard who is the first option (of course):
Later on, Goodman mentioned Florida‘s Todd Golden but did not offer an opinion as to whether or not it would be a good fit. Grant McCasland of Texas Tech as well but Goodman does not “think he leaves Texas, so we can cross off him.”
On the Gridiron
Yahoo’s Ross Dellinger on a new framework for student-athlete compensation, devaluing the NCAA and a new LLC taking shape to be in charge of the payments to athletes and boarded by members of each of the Power Four universities. If this sort of thing interests you, I would definitely read it.
