Post-Game Thoughts: Texas Tech 64, Oklahoma State 54

Game Links:

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Going to do something a little different. I’m giving this to Kevin Overton, Christian Anderson and Federiko Federiko. Overton had 5 of his 7 points in the 2nd half (the team only scored 27), Anderson scored 4, and Federiko scored 6 in the second half. The bench scored 15 of the team’s 27 points in the 2nd half.

The Motion:

  • I stopped watching the game in the 2nd half (I had to take Youssouf to basketball training) when Texas Tech was up by 15 or 16 and when I left, I thought this game was pretty well sewn up, but that was not the case. Oklahoma State went on a 15-1 run with about 9 minutes left and the score got down to 49-52 before Texas Tech went on a mini-run on their own and went up by 7. Not ideal, but Oklahoma State got ridiculously hot and to get a win when an opposing team goes berserk. A team should get credit for steadying the ship and coming away with a win.
  • I do think that Oklahoma State played some terrific defense and their ability to deny shots was superb. They were pretty good in the 1st half, but then were even better in the 2nd. Texas Tech shot 44% from the field and 31% from deep in the 1st and then 39% from the field and 11% from deep. Oklahoma State getting hot and then Texas Tech going cold for an entire half is something.
  • Also interesting, Texas Tech had just 18 shots, yes, just 18 shots in the 2nd half. The Red Raiders shot 32 shots int he first half.
  • I think that OSU’s thoughts were for Hawkins to get up shots because he shot 9 and he was 0-6 from beyond the arc. He’s been off for the last few games and it hasn’t been pretty for sure. And that non-turnover streak has ended too, he had 5 assists to 4 turnovers, which were team highs on both accounts.
  • Chance McMillian would have been the player of the game in normal situations, 14 points, on 5 of 8, 3 of 6 from deep, 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2 turnovers.
  • Really happy that Kerwin Walton hit 2 early 3’s. He’s going to be needed at some point and I’d prefer to see him a bigger part of this team.
  • Oklahoma State had 22 turnovers to just 13 for Texas Tech. Texas Tech capitalized with 20 points and OSU had just 11. The Cowboys also out-rebounded Texas Tech, 30-27. Texas Tech managed just 7 offensive boards and OSU had 6.
  • Head coach Grant McCasland: “For the most part, our defense was good. We made it difficult and forced 22 turnovers. We just didn’t play well and a lot of that had to do with Oklahoma State and their activity level and how they turn people over. We were in for it today, but did find a way to win.”
  • Advanced stats said that Walton was the best player at +15.1, McMillian at +12.7, Federiko +10.1, Overton +7.0, Williams +4.8 and Anderson +2.2. Hawkins was -9.7 and Toppin was -1.3.
  • Up next? Hosting TCU on Wednesday, January 29th at 6:00 p.m.
