On the Court

The Lady Raiders lost to TCU 69-43 on Saturday night and some more bad stats. Texas Tech made just 23% of their shots, 12% from deep. Good news is that there were only 13 turnovers, but TCU had 10 blocks to just 1 for Texas Tech, and the Horned Frogs had 16 assists to just 4 for Texas Tech. Bailey Maupin had 23 points, but it took her 25 shots to get there. She did have 8 rebounds for what it’s worth.

The Lady Raiders are at Iowa State tomorrow evening, tip-off at 6:30 p.m. and the men are in Manhattan tomorrow to take on Kansas State with tip-of at 8:00 p.m.

On the Gridiron

As noted below, Texas Tech is set to hire Lindsey Scott as QB coach and was an analyst at Texas State last year for new offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich. Scott played at Incarnate Word along with Leftwich as the OC and as a senior in 2022 Scott completed 71% of his passes, threw for 4,657 yards, 10.3 yards per attempt, 60 touchdowns, and 8 picks. That’s a pretty good line. Scott also won the Walter Payton award in 2022 and prior to arriving at Incarnate Word, he was at Nicholls for 3 years to start his college career.

Much ado about nothing last week as it was rumored that Texas Tech was interested in Georgia QB Carson Beck. At the time, I mentioned that James Blanchard shot that down pretty quickly by reposting a tweet about how Texas Tech wasn’t interested, but that didn’t stop the aggregators in creating news when there likely was not any. CBS Sports’ John Talty and Chris Hummer go into some detail about Beck’s eventual commitment to Miami, for $4 million:

After the success this past season with quarterback Cam Ward, who was believed to be the highest-paid transfer quarterback in the 2024 transfer cycle, Miami wanted to replicate the experience with another established quarterback. Miami made a hard run at Washington State transfer John Mateer, offering more than $3 million, according to sources, before he decided to reunite with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle at Oklahoma. From the onset of NIL becoming legalized in 2021, Miami supporters have been among the most aggressive in the country in trying to secure top talent for the ACC school.

People around the Miami program would have been interested in Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, among others, according to sources, but neither player entered the transfer portal. Ewers told ESPN in a pre-taped interview on Friday that he did not anticipate playing college football in 2025.
