The Morning Stake | 2025.01.06

Good morning and I hope that you are warm wherever you are.

On the Court

I had not noticed until today that T-Rank also ranks women (for reference purposes, T-Rank does a great job in my estimation at giving you statistical data about teams and ranks teams based upon that statistical data). Texas Tech is ranked 62nd overall, 76th on offense and 63rd on defense. What holds them back on offense is that they are 278th in turnovers and on defense, the Lady Raiders are 336th in allowing opponents to grab offensive boards and ranked 310th in putting other teams on the free throw line.

On the Gridiron

Texas Tech football announced that Joey McGuire and new defensive coordinator Shiel Wood have hired Rob Greene as the new safeties coach. Green worked with Wood at Wofford and Tulane. Green was the defensive backs coach at Tulane in 2023, but listed as a defensive analyst and safeties coach in 2024. That’s a weird way to word that he’s the safeties coach.

And another interesting note is that Greene played football and was a receiver at Wofford. Wood was his position coach as a freshman at Wofford.

As far as statistics go, Tulane was 27th in the nation with 14 picks, same as Texas Tech, had 34 passes broken up and 28 quarterback hurries. Again, for comparison purposes, Texas Tech had 32 pass break-ups and 41 quarterback hurries. Also, Tulane was 46th in pass defense according to Sharpe Football, 64th in explosive drives and 51st in drive efficiency. I’m not trying to credit Greene for the pass defense, just letting you know where he came from.

Texas Tech football further announced that guard Davion Carter announced that he would return for an extra season of eligibility as he began his career at a junior college, and a recent ruling allowed for JUCO guys to play a 5th year. That means that Sheridan Wilson and Vinny Sciury will return along the offensive line along with Carter.

As you may recall, Texas Tech has signed 3 transfer offensive linemen:

+ OT Howard Sampson (6-8/325) North Carolina
+ OT Hunter Zambrano (6-5/305) Illinois State
+ OT Will Jados (6-8/307) Miami (Ohio)
