Texas Tech Football Notebook: Carter, Griffis, Phillips & Hunter Added

I’m adding what’s projected rather than just what’s been announced with the hope of getting ahead of some of this stuff. These were the additional portal transfers from yesterday as well as two that are unconfirmed, but projected:

+ Louisiana TE Terrance Carter, Jr. (6-2/239): A sophomore last year, playing all 13 games, collecting 48 receptions for 689 yards and 4 touchdowns. Carter is originally from Killeen and will obviously have two years remaining.

+ Wake Forest QB Mitch Griffis (5-11/193): A senior who didn’t complete a pass in 2024, but completed 60% of his passes in 2023 for 1,553 yards, 7.5 yards an attempt, 9 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He also ran for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns on 106 attempts for 1.21 yards an attempt. Griffis is a “break glass in case of emergency” quarterback and if you can afford to have that on your team, why not.

+ Frenship QB Holden Phillips (6-1/190): I was quickly reminded by Dunka yesterday morning that I forgot to post about the commitment of Phillips on Monday. Phillips completed 75% of his passes for 4,453 yards, 57 touchdowns and 7 interceptions for his senior year, where he was named district MVP. Unbelievable that he didn’t have a scholarship somewhere and was going to play baseball instead.

+ UCF DT Lee Hunter (6-4/320): As a junior last year Phillips had 26 tackles, 9.5 of them being tackles for a loss, 1 sack, and 6 quarterback hurries. That size alone is encouraging, but to add production along with it is terrific.

+ UNCONFIRMED North Carolina OT Howard Sampson (6-8/325): Played at North Texas before arriving at North Carolina, originally from Humble. Sampson was apparently the starter at left tackle for the Tar Heels.

+ UNCONFIRMED Maryland RB Roman Hemby (6-0/208): Hemby ran for 607 yards on 134 carries, 4.53 yards a carry with 6 touchdowns, with an additional 40 receptions for 273 yards and 6.83 yards a catch and a touchdown. He was Maryland’s leading rusher last year, averaging about 50 yards rushing a game.

+ UNCONFIRMED Georgia Tech OLB Romello Height (6-3/240): Finished with 34 tackles, 1 interception, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, 4 quarterback hurries, and 2 forced fumbles last year for the Ramblin’ Wreck.
