Starting 5

1. Stats. I had no idea that Chris Holtman was the head coach at DePaul and had to go remind myself who the head coach at Michigan was (it’s Dusty May) and Ohio State (it’s Jake Diebler). DePaul is pretty darned good offensively and that’s going to be a problem for a defensively challenged Texas Tech. The Blue Demons are 11th in 3-point shooting, 22nd in 2-point shooting, and 47th in offensive rebounding. the deficiencies are that they are a high turnover team, 291st, and don’t get to the line very much, 141st in free throw rate, and they don’t hit free throws really well, 232nd. Defensively, they’re defending pretty well, 29th in guarding the 3-point line and 17th in 2-point defense. DePaul is 52nd in limiting opponent offensive rebounding and 60th in limiting opponent free throws.

2. Scouting. Holtman really distributes the minutes, no one plays more than 69% of minutes and there’s 9 deep. Rivera, Meyer, D’Amico, Skogman, and Enright are all fantastic shooters from deep, so I am guessing that DePaul creates issues for teams because they can spread you out. Skogman and Traynor are the best rebounders, along with Benson. Blocker and Enright are the two main distributors and they do it well. Enright tends to have issues turning the ball over, so that could be a weakness.

3. How They Match Up. This should be a really fun game offensively. The Blue Demons appear to be a team that is fun offensively and Texas Tech needs to play teams that help make them better defensively. I think that McCasland is ramping up the minutes of Overton because he can defend and Walton will have to do that if he wants to see big minutes. Texas Tech’s 3-point defense is 294th in the nation and I am sure that DePaul is thinking they’ll feast there.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech and unbeaten DePaul are set to square off in a Big 12-Big East Battle matchup at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena with the Red Raiders currently riding a 35-game non-conference home winning streak and the Blue Demons being one of only 17 teams without a loss.

“We’re excited to be back in the USA and love our team’s progress the last couple of weeks,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “DePaul has a fantastic team and is playing with a lot of confidence. They are difficult to defend with a great plan and role definition. You can tell they are in a really confident place on both ends. We’re excited about playing in the Big 12-Big East challenge and the opportunity to represent the Big 12. We take that very seriously and are excited to play a great team that I feel like will be a tough matchup for us.”
