Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Texas Tech football: Kirby Hocutt tells Brett Yormark level of officiating ‘unacceptable’
“I will call you in the morning,” Hocutt wrote to Yormark on Nov. 11, “but I hope you will personally watch the video we submitted for the post game officiating report for our game versus Colorado. I didn’t want to say this to Greg or Scott for concern it would be shared with a crew that could be assigned to one of our last two games, but I believe you recognize that our level of officiating is unacceptable.
“We must demand a much higher level of performance and establish some accountability. I think any football coach would have to agree the missed calls had a significant impact on the outcome of our game vs CU.
“We need to have some in depth and direct conversations as a group after this season is over. Simply, we must be better.”
Times West Virginian’s Bob Hertzel: COLUMN: WVU’s run-first offense to get tested Saturday at Texas Tech
Neither team has had any answers for passing offenses, so one might expect the hills to be alive with flying footballs as Mountaineers quarterback Garrett Greene and Texas Tech’s Behren Morton exchange aerial knockout punches.
Oddly, the two teams also have dynamic rushing games with WVU relying on Greene, Jahiem White and CJ Donaldson Jr. and Texas Tech on Tahj Brooks, but the strength of the two defenses are against the run, WVU ranking 50 in rush defense and Texas Tech 66, which would seem to indicate until either shows it can stop the pass, the game may just “spiral” out of control.
“They’ve played really well against the run, and we know what we’re going to get,” Brown said. “They are going to blitz our run game; they’ve had success against us in the past, and we haven’t played as well when we’ve gone out to Lubbock. That’s going to be a challenge in itself.”
WVU is built on a run-first basis and relies on balance and ball control, but choosing between the run or the pass is like offering a 6-year-old a choice between chocolate chip cookies and spinach.
Red Raider Sports Jarrett Ramirez: Senior day emotions not exclusive to Texas Tech’s multi-year mainstays
“I’m definitely already feeling the emotions,” safety CJ Baskerville told the media Tuesday. “I know I was only here for two years but Texas Tech changed my life, it really did. Texas Tech allowed me to come back home and play in front of my friends and family, which I’ve always dreamed of doing. I’ve met the best people here, people that I’ll cherish forever in my life.
Every morning I wake up, I think about how Saturday is gonna be my last time playing in The Jones, I get a little emotional. On Saturday I’m definitely gonna feel some type of way about it, but I’m definitely gonna put it out on the field of how important and how passionate I feel about this place.”
