On the Pitch
Texas Tech soccer fell to No. 1 ranked Duke 3-0 on Friday night. A terrific season that looked like it was headed to the ditch ended up with 15 wins on the year. Congrats to the entire program on a fantastic season.
On the Course
Texas Tech cross country had the NCAA Cross Country Championships and Juliet cherubet finished 11th overall in the 6k, but on the men’s side Ernest Cheruiyot finished with a very slow time (slow for him) of 30:06.2 and Solomon Kipchoge did not finish. Would like to know what happened there. Regardless, congrats to Juliet!

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on the wild ride that was Saturday night’s win over Oklahoma State:
The Cowboys answered Rodriguez’s touchdown with one of their own with 2:35 left, forcing the Red Raiders to keep making plays. Trevon McAlpine blocked the OSU point-after, keeping the lead 56-48. On the next series, Morton ran for a critical 12 yards on third-and-11, enabling Tech to take more time off the clock.
Rather than risk an incomplete pass and clock stoppage, the Red Raiders called quarterback draw into a light box.
“It was perfect; coach Kittley with the great play call,” Morton said. “He said, ‘Just sell like you’re throwing a route, and then just take off and find it.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams had his report card from the game:
Defense: D
Allowing five second-half touchdowns won’t cut it, but Jacob Rodriguez salvaged the day with two big plays at the end. The unit gave up Ollie Gordon’s season-high 156 yards and didn’t force many mistakes from a freshman quarterback.
Dallas Morning News’ Justin Apodaca has 5 takeaways from the win on Saturday:
3. Tech defense has no answer for Gordon, freshman QB Smith
It was another struggle defensively for the Red Raiders, who had a great start to the game. Tech forced four punts in the first half but couldn’t buy a stop in the second half.
Tech struggled to get off the field, giving up five touchdowns in the second half and only getting off the field with the fumble over Smith’s head, the interception and a missed field goal late in the third quarter.
Smith had a great game in his first career start, going for 326 yards and two touchdowns in the game while Ollie Gordon II had his best game of the season with 156 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries.
Dallas Morning News has the Big 12 title game scenarios. This doesn’t interest me at all, despite the fact that Texas Tech’s game with West Virginia has implications in what eventually happens. I recognize that this may interest some of you, so have at it.
