Starting 5

1. Stats. Syracuse is a pretty good offensive team, they are a terrific team shooting it inside the 3-point line, 79th in the nation, but 338th in 3-point shooting. They are a team that doesn’t turn the ball over, 24th in the nation, but don’t necessarily hit the offensive boards, 149th, and don’t get to the line, 163rd. On defense, they don’t turn teams over, 317th, but they do limit offensive boards, 4th in the nation. that’s the one area on defense where they really excel. They are 155th in defensive 3-point shooting and 254th in defensive 2-point shooting.

2. Scouting. Lampkin is making his world tour, he was originally with TCU, so if he sounds familiar, that’s it, then spent last year at Colorado, and is now at Syracuse. Lampkin is a load and he’s a terrific passer to boot, as well as a great shooter, other than at the line. Starling is a terrific player, high usage along with Lampkin, is a great shooter inside the arc, but is only making 29% of his 3-point shots. Davis and Freeman are great rebounders along with Lampkin.

3. How They Match Up. Let’s get to the St. Joseph’s game real quick. Texas Tech just didn’t shoot the ball well and then just sort of settled. They made 1 of 10 from deep in the first half and just 3 of 10 in the second half. In pretty much all other areas, Texas Tech was fine. Texas Tech out-rebounded St. Joe’s, had just 11 turnovers to 13, had 18 2nd chance points to just 3 for the Hawks, and had 44 points in the paint to just 20. Chance McMillian was great as was TJ Toppin, I’m not worried about them at all, while Darrion Williams was okay, but didn’t have a great shooting day, 7 of 19. Elijah Hawkins is still working his way back, just 1 of 7 last night and just 3 assists to 3 turnovers. Defnsively, Texas Tech didn’t guard the 3-point line well at all, St. Joe’s was 12 of 22, plus Texas Tech put them at the line 29 times. Shoot better, guard the 3-point line and win that game.

Texas Tech basketball: Red Raiders fall in Legends Classic

Texas Tech fought back from a 10-point halftime deficit but saw a last-second shot rim out in a 78-77 loss to Saint Joseph’s at the UKG Legends Classic on Thursday at Barclays Center.

“Our guys were competitive late, we just dug ourselves too big of a hole over the course of the game,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “It was a great team we played against in a great event. We have a long way to go with our team but I believe in them. We are going to find a way to get there.”
