Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese: Texas Tech football hosts Baylor: Scouting report, predictions for Big 12 game
Score prediction: Texas Tech 37, Baylor 28
Bottom line: The Bears may be able to generate some yardage through the air, but the rest of the game could be a struggle inside The Jones, where Texas Tech is 4-0 on the year and has beaten better teams than Baylor this season.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: If Dave Aranda’s a goner, will Baylor go after Texas Tech football’s Joey McGuire?
When Traylor gracefully declined, thinking the timing was wrong after one year at UTSA, Tech turned to Mr. Exuberance. McGuire’s put the Red Raiders on a steady upward trajectory, his 5-1 record in year three making him 20-12 overall.
Unless Baylor course corrects pronto, the Bears will finish with their fourth losing record in Aranda’s five years. That’s time to fire in the eyes of a lot of shot callers. Traditionally, anyway. With schools soon needing another $20 million-plus for revenue sharing, will ADs be as quick to change coaches?
Midland-Reporter Telegram’s Oscar LeRoy: LEROY: It’s all about finding a way to win for Texas Tech
McGuire said finding a way to win those close games goes back to leadership, especially from senior linebacker Bryce Ramirez, junior linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, senior running back Tahj Brooks, senior offensive lineman Caleb Rogers and junior quarterback Behren Morton.
“Last year we didn’t find a way to win one-score games and this year we’re doing the opposite,” McGuire said. “Their resilience and their belief in each other is absolutely amazing. I go back to what I said in the spring and during the summer; the leadership on this team is pretty impressive. They meet every Tuesday. They go through different things, and they have a big voice in what the week is going to look like. They have a big voice in what goes earlier in the play-call sheet on both sides of the ball and what gets moved down. I have a lot of trust in that. I haven’t been around a lot of guys like that. That’s what keeps us going and keeps us pushing through in tight games.”
