Pretty light day today.
On the Court (Volleyball & Tennis)
Texas Tech volleyball will host No. 18 TCU tonight and then will go to Ames to take on Iowa State on Friday night. They’ve had a tough go at it the past few matches.
Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova won the doubles title at the ITA Texas Regional and have now qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships. Congrats!
On the Gridiron
Inside the Red Raiders’ Jarret Johnson writes that Texas Tech is trying to flip Boise State commit RB Brendon Haygood from Sachse (5-9/180). I haven’t thought about recruiting in a long time, but know that it’s important and part of the process and that this current class isn’t highly rated.
24/7 Sports’ Cody Nagel has midseason grades for the Big 12 and has Texas Tech with a B:
Midseason grade: B
This might be a bit harsh for Texas Tech, but taking into account where expectations were coming into the season for the Red Raiders, this 5-1 start and undefeated record against Big 12 opponents is about right where they should be. The lone loss for Texas Tech came without stud running back Tahj Brooks when he missed the road trip to Washington State due to injury. Brooks has at least 100 yards rushing in 13 of his last 16 games played dating back to last season. During that stretch, he is averaging more than 130 rushing yards per contest. Four one-score wins is a little concerning for the Red Raiders, but they are clearly in the mix for a trip to the Big 12 title game.
ESPN’s Eli Lederman Max Olson on the most impactful newcomers and Josh Kelly checks in at No. 46:
46. WR Josh Kelly
Transfer: Washington State to Texas Tech
After four years at Fresno State and one at Washington State last fall, Kelly has emerged immediately as one of the Big 12’s top pass catchers with the Red Raiders in 2024. Kelly’s 44 receptions rank second among Big 12 wide receivers, including nine catches for 95 yards against his former team in Texas Tech’s Week 2 loss to Washington State. Kelly has dropped four passes, but his five contested catches land him eighth in the Big 12.
