Both Texas Tech basketball teams will headline in the inaugural “Broadway Block Party” on Monday, October 28th from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. This sounds like a fantastic idea:
“Broadway Block Party”, a celebration of Texas Tech basketball, is set for Monday, October 28 with a Flex Court being installed on the historic brick street and a night full of opportunities for fans to interact with players from the women’s and men’s programs.
The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders will shut down a section of Broadway Street for the preseason event which will run from 7:30-9 p.m. directly in front of Chimy’s. Festivities will feature games for fans, team introductions, skill contests and a fireworks show to close out the night. Competitions between the players include ‘knockout’ and a 3-point contest, while there will also be a kids slam dunk contest with young fans from the crowd being selected to showcase their skills.
Admission is free for students and fans.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese looks at the roster and projects starters, which he has Elijah Hawkins and Kevin Overton in the backcourt and Darrion Williams, JT Toppin, and Federiko Federiko in the frontcourt. I personally think that Chance McMillian starts over Overton and for me the 6th man is Kerwin Walton followed by Overton and Christian Anderson in the backcourt and then Eemeli Yalaho and Devan Cambridge in some form or fashion in the frontcourt. Regardless, it will be fluid and the biggest thing for me will be if head coach Grant McCasland will increase the rotation and play more guys this year.
On the Gridiron
Congrats to Jacob Rodriguez for being named the Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week!
Red Raider Sports’ Justin Apodaca on Joey McGuire on the bye week and what he hopes to accomplish:
While Tech is on the bye, it provides an opportunity to rest and reset for the older players, but it also presents a large opportunity for the scout team and young players on the roster, who may have the chance to get into the fold down the stretch.
“We really get some young guys that are coming on, get them on film to see if we can get them going, or get them to help us, you know, down the stretch in the second part of the season,” McGuire said.
“A lot of it’s kind of health. Like, it was great, Isaac Smith practiced yesterday, Amier Washington practiced yesterday, Chapman Lewis is trending in a really good direction…you want to see like Eddy Smith traveled with us to Arizona and was available if we got to a point, he’s trending in a really good direction. Peyton Morgan, Malik (Esquerra) traveled with us…But when you get that thin in some of those positions, those young guys have got to be ready to step up and and there are some guys, Oliver (Miles) at STAR, has done a really good job.”
The Wichita Eagle’s Kellis Robinett with his Big 12 power rankings has Texas Tech No. 2:
2. Texas Tech (5-1, 3-0 Big 12) Forgive me if this turns out to be way too much of an overreaction, but I’m starting to think Joey McGuire has built a contender at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are undefeated when running back Tahj Brooks plays this season, and he rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns against Arizona. With Baylor and TCU up next, Texas Tech is well-positioned to continue winning before it heads to Iowa State for what could be a colossal showdown of conference heavyweights on Nov. 2.
