On the Court
Texas Tech volleyball will start Big 12 play tonight in Salt Lake City, Utah, to face Utah tonight and then BYU on Saturday.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on volleyball’s Mia Wesley and her journey to Texas Tech. Wesley is the daughter of Mekeli Wesley who was a star basketball player at BYU:
“Our only constant was each other,” Mia said. “I feel like that was easy for us to develop relationships and learn how to be successful.”
The strongest relationship Wesley formed at Southern Miss was with Reagan Leinen, an Amarillo native. Starting as roommates, the two formed a yin-and-yang bond that has persisted. The pair even took a quiz that proved it. Wesley’s results showed she hated to lose. Leinen’s showed she loved to win. Similar answers with different mentalities.
Being away from her home base, Leinen’s family has become a surrogate.
“I have a family away from my family,” Wesley said. “I know that they’ll take care of me.”
On the Gridiron
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on safety Chapman Lewis and DC Tim DeRuyter has high praise for the sophomore:
“He’s a guy that just has a knack for being a football player who understands the game,” DeRuyter said, “so he plays faster than normal. He’s not very big, but he’s unafraid to go make a tackle physically. He can trigger. He can diagnose a play and know when to go at the right angles.
“And so I think the more playing time he gets, the more comfortable he is, the more food he eats on the training table to get his weight back up to where we want it to be, he’s going to be a tremendous football player for us. Losing Rabbit (Taylor-Demerson) in that spot last year was a concern, but I think Chapman’s really doing a nice job of filling those shoes.”
On the Ice
Texas Monthly’s Jason Cohen on Texas Tech club hockey’s tortilla-themed hockey jerseys.
“The idea kind of hit me out of nowhere,” Loncar says. “What if we had tortilla jerseys? Like, not just a patch [of a tortilla]. Make the entire jersey a tortilla?”
The team’s apparel company, X Jerseys, in San Antonio, couldn’t have been happier to taco its best shot. “I have done some pretty cool alternative jerseys over the years, but this is definitely in the top five,” cofounder Ryan Oson, also a hockey player, says. “Because of how custom it was and what it connected to.”
