Texas Tech Football Notebook: Cam’Ron Valdez Out for Remainder of Year

Youssouf had his 2nd game last night, a 20-18 win over Jackson Elementary. He scored all 3 touchdowns including the game-winner with 40 seconds remaining. He also forced a fumble on the last play to secure the win and chased a kid down to force a fumble, punching it out. He said he’s dreamed about making that play. We didn’t get home until 10:something so I’m just getting links done this morning.

On the Gridiron

Texas Tech football released their game notes and some more bad news as you can now add RB Cam’Ron Valdez to the out for the year with a knee injury. I wish someone would have asked a question, like if anyone would be switching to running back to help with depth. I remember redshirt freshman J’Maury Davis was an electric running back in high school, but he’s now at defensive back. And for clarification, the running backs now are Tahj Brooks, Cameron Dickey, J’Koby Williams, Adam Hill (a walk-on freshman running back from Albany), and Jaden Morris (a walk-on from Arlington who was a back-up quarterback last year). That’s just 3 scholarship running backs remaining.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: How Texas Tech football freshmen like J’Koby Williams capitalized on the Red Raider rout

“It was one of my favorite plays from the game,” offensive coordinator Zach Kittley said. “He’s such a great kid. He comes from a real small community out there in East Texas and he does everything you ask him to do, and he does it a million miles an hour. And I think you see the explosiveness that he can bring.”

Tech led 52-7 at halftime, so the Red Raiders were able to use young players down on the depth chart. Quarterback Will Hammond and wide receiver Micah Hudson made the first of what Tech fans expect to be many connections. Receiver Tyson Turner caught his first pass, Cameron Dickey carried 10 times for 75 yards and offensive linemen Jacob Ponton and Holton Hendrix had their moments. They’re all true freshmen.
