The Morning Stake | 2024.09.05

Just a quick reminder. I’m leaving for Washington State tomorrow morning really early. The Game Preview will be posted tomorrow morning and depending on my situation I’ll post a 10 Things on Sunday morning. We’ll see after that, but won’t make any promises that next week will be a normal week as I get back Monday afternoon and then have Youssouf’s first football game that evening.

On the Diamond

Texas Tech assistant coach Joe Hughes stepped down yesterday to pursue opportunities outside of college baseball.

“Joe has played a critical role in the success of our program here at Texas Tech and will be greatly missed,” Tadlock said. “Joe and his family will always be part of our baseball program. We wish them nothing but the best as they move in a new direction in life.”

I won’t comment on this other than I know that Hughes was really important to Texas Tech and has been here as long as Tadlock. And the reason I won’t comment is that I just don’t feel that I have a good handle on the state of the program to give an informed opinion. Shocking for someone not to opine on something even though they could, but here we are. Restraint is sometimes a good thing.

On the Court

Texas Tech volleyball will host the Red Raider Classic starting tonight. Match details for the weekend are at the link.

On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on Texas Tech’s advertising deal with the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes:

The contract runs from the 2021 through 2027 seasons, covering Chiefs preseason, regular season and postseason games with either party able to renew for three additional years. Over the first seven seasons, Tech is due to pay partnership fees totaling a little more than $6.47 million, or an average of $924,700 per year. If the deal is renewed and lasts for 10 years, the partnership fees total only a few hundred dollars less than $10 million for an average of $999,942 per year.

The annual installments started at $795,000 in 2021. With 5% annual increases, Tech’s payments are $920,312 this year, $1,065,377 in 2027 and, if the three-year option is exercised, $1,233,306 in 2030.

the Wichita Eagle’s Kellis Robinett has his initial Big 12 Power Rankings (yikes):

15. Texas Tech (1-0) Nothing ever seems to come easy for the Red Raiders in nonconference games. They once again flirted with disaster against Abilene Christian before prevailing 52-51 in overtime. This was an embarrassing result for Texas Tech, even though it counts as a win. Abilene Christian quarterback Maverick McIvor threw for 506 yards and three touchdowns. Yikes. The Wildcats had multiple opportunities to win in the final moments, including on a two-point conversion in overtime. The Red Raiders survived, but this doesn’t build much confidence for the rest of the season. I dropped them seven spots.
