On the Pitch

Texas Tech had a strong second half to lead them to a 5-0 win over St. Bonaventure with the first goal from Peyton Parson in the 1st half and then 2 goals from Skylar Haase, a goal from Molly Skurcenski, and a goal from Taylo Zdrojewski. The TTU defense allowed zero shots on goal if that tells you anything about this game.

On the Gridiron

Texas Tech held their 2024 Red Raider Club Kickoff Luncheon yesterday where the big announcement was that Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes made a gift of $5 million to the Dustin R. Womble Football Center, the final gift in the Campaign for Fearless Champions. Pretty amazing and there’s a quote in the article from Kirby Hocutt that said that Mahomes was just a freshman when this campaign was announced.

In recognition of the gift, Texas Tech will name its soon-to-be-completed walkthrough area in the Womble Football Center in his name. The three-time Super Bowl champion will also be recognized by being the namesake for Texas Tech’s quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new South End Zone Building to Jones AT&T Stadium.

“There isn’t a greater ambassador for Texas Tech Athletics than Patrick Mahomes,” head coach Joey McGuire said. “He is arguably the best brand in sports, not only for his success on the field but for what he and his family do off it. Since my hiring here at Texas Tech, it’s been evident to me just how much Patrick truly loves this university and football program, and this gift further emphasizes that. On behalf of our entire program, we can’t thank Patrick and Brittany enough for the impact they are making on our student-athletes and the future of Texas Tech Football.”

ESPN has a very neat (yes, using the word neat) story and graphic about the history of conference realignment.

Lubbock Avalanche Journal’s Don Williams has two articles, what’s known and not known about the defense and offense. This is a position-by-position breakdown and I’m going to post the defensive backs and wide receiver.

To be determined: Lux is the acknowledged No. 1 corner for the first time. He will measure up to the other team’s top receiver every week, as Joey McGuire has said is the plan. McCarty, Lewis and Horn are all talented โ€” and all first-time starters. Maybe it’ll work out, but it’s a set of circumstances fraught with potential for breakdowns.

To be determined: A lot, including who becomes the go-to guy and how soon Hudson can deliver on his recruiting-trail fanfare. He didn’t persuade Joey McGuire to give him jersey No. 1 for nothing. Also, how does the Red Raiders’ off-season emphasis on improving the screen game pan out?

Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez on new free safety Chapman Lewis, who is expected to take over the role that Dadrion Taylor-Demerson had for so long.

โ€œComing in as a freshman, being a two behind Rabbit last year, I feel like that was the best position I could have been in,โ€ Lewis said a week ago. โ€œBeing behind a vet who is playing in the NFL right now, which is where I want to be. Rabbit definitely took me under his wing, you know what Iโ€™m saying, and I appreciate that so much. I still keep in contact with him now, but just on a daily, just watching how he went by his day, being a pro, in the training room, with the playbook, stuff like that.
