Texas Tech Football Notebook: Fitch, McGuire & Perry Talk Progress

A bit busy the night before and last night. First day of school stuff happening, so we’ve been meeting teachers and all sorts of things. I tried a different YouTube AI summary tool with light editing on my end, simply because my time was more crunched than normal.

Zarnell Fitch

– **Jaden Cofield’s Progress**: Jaden Cofield, a redshirt freshman, has been a standout by taking on a leadership role similar to older teammates who left, and is making significant strides in understanding and contributing to the team.

– **Depth and Rotation**: The team has significantly improved depth compared to two years ago, now able to rotate up to six players, which helps maintain player health and leverages individual strengths effectively. Dooda Banks and Quincy Ledet took large portion of reps.

– **De’Braylon Carroll’s Experience**: Carroll’s experience has positively impacted the team, adding maturity and leadership, which has been beneficial in the defensive line.

– **James Hansen’s Adjustment**: James Hansen, who missed spring practices, is catching up well due to his intelligence and mental preparation, and is contributing to various practice groups.

– **Quincy Ledet’s Leadership**: Quincy has stepped up as a leader and key player following the departure of prominent teammates, demonstrating impressive athleticism and leadership qualities. Best trait is that he can be 325 pounds and can be an athlete. Can thank James Blanchard for that.

– Will have 4 guys as starters A and starters B and will get the same amount of reps and mix and match.

– Tahj is an unbelievable back and sets up blocks and good to play him and see how he carries himself as a representative of this University. Made a major impact on Cofield.

– Not sure when Trevon McAlpine will be back.

Clay McGuire

– **Consistent Performers:** The most consistent players throughout camp are Dalton Merryman, Sheridan Wilson, Caleb Rogers, Ty Buchannan, and Vinnie Sciury. The coaching staff is still evaluating to finalize the top five and top eight players for game readiness.

– **Jackson Hugh’s Progress:** Jackson Hugh, coming off previous injuries, is being carefully managed to ensure full recovery before fully participating. His development is being closely monitored to assess his readiness.

– **Sheridan Wilson’s Growth:** Sheridan Wilson has shown significant improvement, demonstrating dedication, hard work, and consistency. His development from a freshman to a sophomore has positioned him well for opportunities this season. Loves Texas Tech and has not missed one rep since I’ve been here.

– **Caleb Rogers’ Versatility:** Caleb Rogers has impressed with his ability to play all five offensive line positions, showing strong athleticism, leadership, and physical conditioning, making him a key asset in both the run and pass games.

– **Scrimmage and Practice Focus:** Recent practices have emphasized improving run game execution and finishing runs, with a focus on better pass protection. Tahj Brooks’s ability to make plays despite imperfect blocking is highlighted as a major advantage. The coaching staff is also evaluating player competition and finalizing the starting lineup. Quarterbacks were 90% when they had a clean pocket and step up and throw.

– Not finishing the run game, need to put it all together and finishing and can do good in that aspect of the offense.

– Luxury to have a guy like Tahj and the other running backs and make things right when things aren’t perfect is great.

– Davion Carter has done a good job the last 2 days, got to get in shape and he’ll get there. High IQ football player. Knows how to play the game. Has had a good couple of days.

– Dalton Merryman got an opportunity to get in there with the 1’s and he’s started playing well and took advantage of reps he wasn’t scheduled to have. He’s gotten better and hasn’t played a lot of football, he has the chance to be a good football player for us.

– Got some guys back from nagging injuries and still need to figure out who our 5 best are and Merryman has been competing with Sterling Porcher.

Kenny Perry

– **Kicking Competition**: The battle between kickers Gino Garcia and Reese Burkhardt remains inconsistent, with both having strong and weak days. The coach hopes one will eventually establish themselves as the primary kicker.

– **Running Back Depth**: The team has strong depth behind Tahj Brooks, with notable performances from Cam Valdez, Cam Dickey, J’Kobe Williams, and Adam Hill. The running back group shows promise for the future. Williams plays hard. Valdez on pass protection, he’s been really physical. Future is bright here and they have made big plays in practice. Adam Hill is a throwback and a walk-on that is tough and is going to help on special teams.

– **Jack Burgess’s Performance**: Jack, a new addition, has integrated well into the team. His strong leg and positive attitude are highlighted, though he will need to adapt to the high-pressure environment.

– **Special Teams and Return Game**: Dray McCrae is expected to handle kickoff returns, with several other players, including Josh Kelly and Micah Hudson, performing well in punt returns. The return game appears solid. Trained Dray for punt returns. Jordan Brown has returned kicks. Think there are 4 or 5 guys that can catch the ball. Catching the ball in college is more difficult than in high school

– **Tajh Brooks’ Development**: Taj Brooks has significantly improved, becoming a key offensive player with strong performance in running, blocking, and catching. He is compared to Saquon Barkley for his physicality and versatility. Tahj needed to be a more vocal leader and he has to know how big of a player he is in this offense. Tahj Brooks changed the offense and is a great running back.

– In coverage, guys lost in the portal, Williams and McCray help, Brendan Jordan, Jordan Sanford, Lewis Chapman, the young guys who we recruited, Kelby Vaslin, Wes Smith and Trent Low
