Texas Tech Football Notebook: McGuire Discusses 1st Scrimmage

Good morning! Lots of football content today. We’ll start with scrimmage highlights:

Head coach Joey McGuire non-transcript.

  • [Opening remarks] Physical. It was one of the most physical scrimmages I’ve had since I’ve been here. Mo Horn, Ben Roberts, Harvey Dyson, Justin Horne really starting to come on, and the 6 defensive tackles, Dooda Banks, Quincy Ledet, De’Braylon Carroll, James Hansen, Jayden Cofield, Braylon Rigsby, was really dominant when it came to the 1st part of the scrimmage, there were 3-and-out with the 1’s and 3’s and the 2nd time with the 2’s.
  • [Offensive standouts] Drae McCray, Jordan Brown, big plays with Josh Kelly in the red zone. Cam Dickey rolled ankle in practice and didn’t go today. J’Koby Williams pushed up, he’s special had big runs of 25 and 30 yards. Offense dominated the red zone, was very sharp, lot of teaching. Too many pre-snap penalties, had a Big 12 crew. Need to make sure we are focused going into next week’s scrimmage.
  • [Offensive line] Did some good things in red zone and pass pro, but when we were going against those 6 defensive guys, there wasn’t a lot of room to run, did a good job of maintaining their gap, need to get better and keep working the pad level. Will have 100% everyone back, this next week will be interesting. Sterling Porcher and Dalton Merryman played left tackle with the 1’s. Had Ty Buchannan and Caleb Rogers at right tackle, had Vinny and Caleb as mainstays at guard. The good thing is that we have good depth, when Cameran Brown was at quarterback they moved it a bit better, but when red zone with the 1’s, we didn’t put up a fight defensively.
  • [Screen plays and receiver blocking] One thing why McCray stood out, he was on the screen side and producing some yardage, as a whole, physicality, the screens were really physical. And had a big play with the red zone and Kelly, Micah Hudson was really physical blocking. The coaching part is maintaining your leverage, just maintain contact and a lot of it is want-to. It is tough and we’re flying to the ball on the screen game. It’s easy yards and have too many guys at the screen game, have to do better on the perimeter.
  • [Bryce Ramirez] Hamstring, he tried to knock Jalin Conyers out of bounds and he’s good.
  • [Joseph Adedire] Same thing, should be back Monday.
  • Bralyn Lux is such a good corner, feel great about him. Felt Maurion Horn had a good spring and he’s taken it to another level, even if the ball is caught, he’s right there. At 185, he’s very physical. I thought the corners was the reason the run game and DT’s, the corners gave our receivers all they could handle.
  • [Star battle] Feel great about both, feel good about 2-deep. I bet we played 22 guys with our 1’s today, even at the star position, I would say A.J. McCarty is the starter, but they both do good things. AJ does a good job of coverage and blitzer and very sudden and Brendan Jordan has more experience and he’s 210 pounds, so lining up over a tight end and setting edges. All angles, he wanted to set the edge and it’s different at this level, he’s doing a lot better at that.
  • [On Cameran Brown] I thought he did a good job, all 4 did a good job. I walked off with Cameron and he thought he played alright, but told him that he can’t get hit, but the run game would look so different with him.
  • [On Behren Morton] Behren threw the ball out of bounds a couple of times, he hung in there when he needed and there were 2 where he threw the ball out of bounds and there were games last year where he would not have.
  • [On outside linebackers] The guys that are going out there, Isaac Smith at the B, Harvey Dyson, Joseph Adedire didn’t go today, they all do good things. Charles Esters and Amier Washington has had a phenomenal camp, and he tweaked his groin and didn’t go today, but he could if we had a game. Ansel Nedore was out there with the 2’s and Sam Carrell was going with the 2’s and 3’s. Ansel was a freshman last year, he’s back. He’s hungry and had a great summer, was 260 pounds. Going to be fun with that group because there are some guys that can do different things. Rigsby can do some things.
  • Dylan Spencer lost for the year with a knee in practice #1 or #2, just took a bad step and over-extended.
  • [Guys who will not redshirt] There’s going to be some, Cam Dickey won’t redshirt, Hudson won’t redshirt. I hope we don’t play 3 or 4 quarterbacks, hope to play just 2. Some guys are really showing up. I don’t see those 2 guys redshirting.
  • Today we went into the stadium and cranked up the volume, the sound system has more, Gio was trying to be sweet to the stadium, 1st time we could see and piped in the crowd noise and all of the quarterback had to cover their ears because it was loud, all quarterbacks have communication, and on defense Jacob Rodriguez, Ben Roberts and Bryce Ramirez have the green dots and will have to have an extra helmet for Cam Brown and 3 linebackers have to have an extra helmet. Free kick can have more than 2 green dots. We’ve only been wearing 1 helmet and scrimmage #2 we’ll have guys on or off with green dots. We need to practice that stuff. DeRuyter is in the box and Kittley, was the 1st day that we worked with the shut-off, am anxious to hear with the players and coaches say.
  • Kittley will talk from the sideline, you’ve heard me gripe about this, you’re still going to see everyone’s signal. We experimented with two linebackers, and please for all of the other coaches, don’t signal, just communicate to 1 guy [he’s saying that this is bad and it is better to signal to all groups].
  • [On the kickers] I would say that today, just going through it, Gino won the day. With our kicks are trying to be 80% at 47 yards. Reese missed one and it was a 40-yarder and Gino made his. Coming in today, Reese had won, but Gino won the day. Trying to put as much pressure and competition. Reese has won the right to be in a battle.
  • [Could not hear the question] Balance out the room, depth at linebacker, if you look at behind Tahj, have a freshman with Dickey at 210 pounds, Valdez is at 205. J’Koby is 180. Adam Hill is 210-215, if someone goes down and want to have a bigger back and hold up at pass pro. I thought Valdez played better after the the offense settled down.

Episode #2 of The Brand. Also, to clarify, the reason I didn’t like the second episode all that much is that I don’t care so much what people at a bar think about Texas Tech football. I am watching to get football content that I can’t see anywhere else and that’s definitely not people at a bar.
