The Morning Stake | 2024.07.15

We’ll finish up this week with the last two Big 12 Snapshots for Utah and West Virginia on Tuesday and Thursday and then get into basketball. Also, I know that EA Sports is set to come out this week and I’m not a video game guy, but absolutely acknowledge the importance of it. I know there have been some screenshot leaks over the weekend, but haven’t seen anything substantial and people have been disappointed that there is no Masked Rider or tortilla toss. This doesn’t seem like that big of a deal because it’s a video game, but I’m obviously not the person to ask.

On the Diamond

On Friday, Tennessee 1st baseman Robin Villeneuve announced that he would transfer to Texas Tech for his final season after winning a National Championship with the Volunteers. Villeneuve hit .288, slugged .513 and was on base at a rate of .447, while hitting 5 homers and had 22 RBI. Villeneuve also played JUCO ball at Weatherford College.

On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams talked to Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt about his X/Twitter comment about how the Horned Frogs would need help filling the stadium in 2024 (which is true, Texas Tech fans do help selling it out):

Asked what he thought of the strategy, Hocutt struck a more serious tone and said, “They’re trying to drive revenue and interest in their program, so they make the decisions that are best for them. But if you’re leaving open seats, you’re leaving revenue on the table, and I know our fans would love to be there and attend a football game. If they can’t sell them, we can.”

There are also items regarding the away game at North Texas in 2027 and keeping that game on the schedule and not buying it out, but did recently buy out the game at Fort Collins against Colorado State.

Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez talked with Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton is ready to be the starter and over his shoulder injury:

The physical attributes and “can-do” attitude are evidenced greatly in his “West Texas tough” nature of play. While some may take Morton’s early shutdown in spring camp to be a negative, the positive extends far more vast than just his shoulder getting the rest it needed.

“That was the biggest takeaway was after the physical part got taken out of it, it was more mental,” Morton said. “Just what I could expand my knowledge of the game outside of the physical part. It was really good to see this offseason what I could take mentally.”

A couple of things that I forgot from the Big 12 Media Day, Tahj Brooks and then Joey McGuire with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams has dates of completion of the new construction project and this is something that generally interests me, but I also just tend to think that things will get done when they get done.
