The Morning Stake | 2024.07.12

Good morning! I’m going to finish the Big 12 Snapshots next week, the last two programs, Utah and West Virginia are the next two up and then we’ll start basketball.

University News

Texas Tech University announced a new brand identity, meaning new fonts and wordmarks and how things appear with Texas Tech. The branding page and then clicking on the visual identity page let’s you know a bit down the page what’s been retired for a logo. Additionally, the new fonts are Neue Plak, Neutraface Slab, and Helvetica Neue. The thing interests me is that the red HEX, which is a color code, has always been #cc0000 and now the red is #E908802.

On the Court

College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein is reporting that Texas Tech and Texas A&M are set to play a neutral site game at Dickies Arena on December 8th. I absolutely love it.

On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese has the top 5 transfer portal acquisitions for 2024 and for no reason at all, here’s the fourth one:

Vinny Sciury, Sr., OL, 6-foot-3, 305 pounds (Toledo)
While Carter’s position is in question, Sciury is pretty much cemented into the left guard position. That’s the same spot Sciury started 33 consecutive games at Toledo, where he was considered one of the top interior linemen in the country. He was a first team all-conference selections last season.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd writes about the new Big 12:

Expanding to 12 teams means more access for everybody, though.

“I don’t think there is a face of the league,” Yormark added. “Every school brings value. Collectively, they create the narrative that we need. I don’t think there is a face or an outlier program that effectively is carrying the torch. Just based on the parity of football, it kind of speaks to the depth and breadth of the conference. That’s OK. Over time, as we mature as a 16-team, league somebody ascends to the top.”

Yormark spoke a lot about parity at the media days. That can be a plus or that can mean you’ve just got a bunch of average teams. Consider the dearly departed Pac-12. The downfall of the league began competitively when it couldn’t compete for championships, not with the fumbled media rights negotiations.

Action Network’s Collin Wilson with a long preview of the Big 12. This is something you read if you don’t want to work this morning or if you want to save to the weekend. Something I didn’t know from reading this is that Baylor, Iowa State, Colorado and Oklahoma State all have a bye week before playing Texas Tech.
