The Morning Stake | 2024.07.03

Monday was a whirlwind. Just to give you an idea, I’ll be running Big 12 Snapshots on Thursday and Friday and probably have an additional post on Friday after the holiday.

Soccer received their day in the sun yesterday with adidas and I am sure they are ecstatic about wearing adidas. The kits look sharp and just from the boots alone, I am sure they are happy. Now, if they would sell the soccer top, I’d buy that and wear that to a game (football, soccer, basketball . . . whatever) because it’s basically a shirt and not a jersey. Sell the kit Texas Tech and adidas. Sell the kit.

Cypress Falls linebacker Kaleb Burns (6-1/215) committed to Texas Tech on Monday and this got lost a bit (by me, not by the coaches) with the adidas unveiling. Burns is a high 3-star linebacker, a top 100 player who had 20+ offers, mostly from Power Four (a bit weird to type that) programs (Rivals | 24/7 Sports | On3). Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez wrote about Burns’ commitment. Burns is really athletic, fast, and instinctual. He’s playing safety and linebacker, really just wherever he will do the most damage, whether that’s at the line of scrimmage or off the line. Linebackers coach Josh Bookbinder was instrumental in the commitment of Burns and he looks like a heck of a player.

Doing this for the comedy of the story a bit. The official site announced two additions to the softball staff, Hunter Veach and Hunter Veach. Well, technically, one of the Hunter is Hunter Goldsmith Veach and is the wife of the Hunter Veach. The Hunters met at TAMU and imagine, they see each other, introduce themselves, think it’s funny that they both have the first name Hunter, the male Hunter says, it would be hilarious if we got married and now you’ve got two Hunter Veach’s. I would like to know what they call each other at home. As to the actual story, both follow new head coach Gerry Glasco to Lubbock from Louisiana.

The Big 12 announced the preseason poll and Texas Tech was picked to finish 9th overall. Here’s the media’s guestimated order of finish (first place votes in parentheses and points to the right):

1. Utah (20) 906
2. Kansas State (19) 889
3. Oklahoma State (14) 829
4. Kansas (5) 772
5. Arizona (3) 762
6. Iowa State 661
7. West Virginia 581
8. UCF 551
9. Texas Tech 532
10. TCU 436
11. Colorado 400
12. Baylor 268
13. BYU 215
14. Cincinnati 196
15. Houston 157
16. Arizona State 141

The Big 12 also announced the 2024 Preseason All-Big 12 team, led by RB Ollie Gordon, II from Oklahoma State and WR/DB Travis Hunter from Colorado. The only two Texas Tech players to make the team was RB Tahj Brooks and KR Drae McCray. And as an FYI, Gordon was arrested for suspicion of DUI and speeding (82 in a 65) and swerving twice into another lane. These are charges (although they did find two open containers of lemonade vodka and tequila so it doesn’t look great for Gordon), not a conviction so don’t jump to too many conclusions.
