The Morning Stake | 2024.07.01

The adidas era is here. But we didn’t get to see anything last night from what I can tell. There were two teaser videos from the football X/Twitter account where the uniforms are revealed and that’s pretty exciting, but we didn’t get to see anything yesterday. Expect this to be played out over time and not just one big release of every team uniform.

On Friday, Texas Tech received another commit from Nebraska offensive lineman Ren Brown (6-6/280), a 3-star with offer from Oregon State, South Dakota, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, South Dakora State, Army, Air Force, Eastern Michigan, Northern Iowa, North Dakota, Montana, Ohio, and Columbia (Rivals | 24/7 Sports | On3). Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez spoke to Brown about his commitment:

“It was the family, it felt like a big family from coaches, to players to nutrition staff,” Brown said. “On the official visit, all the coaches had their wives and their kids there. That just meant so much that they’re bought in and their family, it’s a whole family atmosphere.”

Brown plays 8-man football, so it’s a bit different looking at the video. I don’t know how much to gain from all of this because it’s so different, there’s a lot of space and you wonder how big these kids are that he’s blocking. Regardless, Brown is a big athlete and he definitely looks agile. The staff has secured the commitments of 4 offensive linemen in a very shot perod of time and you’d guess they are done or close to being done recruiting at that position.

Athlon Sports’ Steven Lassan has their full Big 12 preview and has Texas Tech 9th overall and this is pretty well accurate:

Texas Tech earned its second consecutive winning record (7-6) under coach Joey McGuire last year but three losses by one score in September prevented this team from improving on the eight-win mark set in ’22.

Only eight starters are back for ’24, but two of those are on the offensive side in quarterback Behren Morton and All-American running back Tahj Brooks. The Red Raiders must replace three of their top four wide receivers from last season, but true freshman Micah Hudson and transfers Caleb Douglas (Florida) and Josh Kelly (Washington State) will quickly step into major roles. Tight end Jalin Conyers (an Arizona State transfer) is another impact portal commitment, while the trenches are counting on potentially three transfers to start on a unit that brings back just one starter (Caleb Rogers).

Defense has been a long-running issue in Lubbock, but coordinator Tim DeRuyter has generated progress over the last two seasons. However, taking another step forward in ’24 won’t be easy with just four returning starters. Linebackers Jacob Rodriguez and Ben Roberts form a standout duo, and Rice transfer De’Braylon Carroll will help right away in the trenches. Safety C.J. Baskerville is the leader of a revamped secondary.

And this is the predicted order of finish:

1. Utah
2. Kansas State
3. Oklahoma State
4. Kansas
5. Arizona
6. West Virginia
7. Iowa State
8. TCU
9. Texas Tech
10. UCF
11. Colorado
12. Baylor
13. Arizona State
14. BYU
15. Cincinnati
16. Houston

Also from Athlon Sports is the preseaon All-Big 12 team and running back Tahj Brooks and returner Drae McCray are the only first teamers, with offensive lineman Caleb Rogers and linebacker Ben Roberts making the second team. Receiver Josh Kelly, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, cornerback Bralyn Lux, and kicker Gino Garcia make the 3rd team. Tight end Jaylin Conyers and defensive lineman D’Braylon Carroll are on the 4th team.

The official site has a nice story on incoming forward Jalynn Bristow who was previously at Iowa State.

Also from the official site is the release that Two Docs Brewing Co. has an official pale ale, Raiderland Red Pale Ale, as the official NIL beer of Texas Tech:

Texas Tech Athletics announced Friday a sponsorship agreement with Two Docs Brewing Co. to launch Raiderland Red Pale Ale as the official NIL beer of the Red Raiders. With the agreement, a percentage of every sale will support NIL funding for Texas Tech student-athletes through the Matador Club, the official NIL collective of Texas Tech Athletics.

“We are fortunate to have tremendous support from our local business community, especially with Two Docs Brewing Co. through this new agreement,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “We look forward to having Raiderland Red Pale Ale available in many of our venues this upcoming year and developing this sponsorship agreement to truly impact our student-athletes through NIL resources.”

CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah goes pick-by-pick in the Big 12 and goes over the win totals for each team. This is pretty solid, but Jeyarajah isn’t picking any upsets for Texas Tech:

Over/under 7.5

Wins: Abilene Christian, at Washington State, North Texas, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Baylor, Colorado
Losses: at Arizona, at TCU, at Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, West Virginia
Analysis: The Red Raiders are due for some good luck after a horrendous run of injuries last season. Three different quarterbacks started games and three of six losses were by eight points or fewer, headlined by a 38-30 loss to Oregon. Texas Tech needs to rack up victories early in the schedule with four of the first five games at home, but there are plenty of opportunities for mayhem. Pick: Under 7.5 (+110)
