The Morning Stake | 2024.06.19

+ I’m headed to Lubbock sometime around 10 or 10:30 and then driving back sometime tonight or driving as far as I can for Youssouf to attend the 7th and 8th grade camp. Will let you know how things go, but don’t expect much from me tomorrow morning other than I’ll publish the next Big 12 football snapshot.

+ Texas Tech received a commitment from Katy 3-star offensive lineman Patrick McMath (6-4/265) (Rivals | 24/7 Sports | On3). McMath had offers from Arizona, Baylor, BYU, Houston, Houston Christian, Louisiana, Memphis, North Texas, Pitt, Rice, SMU, Texas State, Tulane, and UTSA. Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez spoke with McMath about his commitment:

β€œIt just felt like home from the moment I got there. The staff made me feel like they were a part of my family. I know they are going to do some big things over the next few years and I want to be a part of it.”

McMath looks really nimble for a guy his size, not an absolutely devastating blocker in the sense that he simply overpowers opponents (he obviously does smaller ones), but his quickness and speed is something special and I think the strength side will happen. I like athletes at offensive line and McMath strikes me as a really good athlete.

+ The official site did a Q&A with Texas tech guard Kevin Overton:

What have you learned about yourself through the game?
“That I’m my biggest fan and biggest enemy. Basketball has exterior factors for sure, but it’s taught me to fight through the thoughts in your own head to succeed.”

Is there a pro player you see shades of yourself in?
“From pace and finesse, making plays, Paul George. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on another level, but pace-wise I can see myself in him some.”

+ Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese has a story in Cal 1st baseman Peyton Schulze who hit .323 with 10 homers has committed to Texas Tech. Also should be noted that catcher Davis Rivers announced that he would return, he hit .286 with a .571 slugging.

+ Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on how head coach Joey McGuire made good on his promise to running back Tahj Brooks to reduce the contact in the spring:

“Our very first scrimmage, we were going to have 10 plays for him,” McGuire said recently. “He carried the ball the first time for 6 yards, and then the second time he pulled one off for 27 yards, and I pulled him out. I said, ‘This is ridiculous. I don’t need to see you anymore.’ “

Brooks decided in December to use his last year of eligibility rather than leave early for the NFL. His 290 carries last season were second-most at any level of college football. McGuire promised after the season that the workload for the Doak Walker Award semifinalist would be sharply reduced in the spring, at least insofar as carrying the ball and taking hits.

+ Athlon Sports has their preview of Texas Tech. This is pretty generic, so meh.

+ The Clarion Ledger reported that Mark Adams is joining Chris Beard at Ole Miss. I have no other comment other than I don’t care.
