On the Track

Texas Tech women’s track and field finished 7th overall in the NCAA Championships, while Caleb Dean demolished the field in the 400m hurdles to win a national title. Results are all there and congrats to all of the participants!

On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams writes about back-up quarterback Cameran Brown who the staff specifically coordinated in order to keep the running option open at quarterback and I wonder if Brown will be at quarterback and then slip to running back so that it keeps the defense on edge? In any event, here’s Williams and head coach Joey McGuire:

Some might take that as a sign to avoid running the quarterback at all costs. McGuire says he doesn’t much want to use Morton in a quarterback-run game next season, but that doesn’t mean he’s shelving the quarterback-run game. Not by a long shot. He recruited West Georgia transfer Cameran Brown for the express purpose of keeping that element in the playbook.

McGuire credited senior offensive analyst Kirk Bryant with putting together scouting information for Bryant and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Zach Kittley to review.

“The one thing I wanted whenever I asked them to look is a true dual-threat quarterback,” McGuire said recently, “because it was going to be hard to recruit a guy knowing that Behren was the number-one guy. Part of the sales pitch to him coming to Texas Tech is that, ‘We’re going to be able to play you in different situations, so it’s not like you’re just coming to be a backup.’ “

A look inside the progress in the South end zone of Jones AT&T Stadium. I am sure it has been pointed out that an old logo as well as the flat double-T is being used in the locker room and I approve.

On the Diamond

So now we know how Wyoming feels. Texas Tech announced yesterday that head softball coach Craig Snider resigned on Saturday night to be the pitching coach for the Tennessee Volunteers.

“We expect to compete for Big 12 Championships at Texas Tech,” Hocutt said. “We have a young and talented roster that is more than ready to build off this past season and compete for championships. It is important to find the next leader who is dedicated to growing our student-athletes on and off the field while elevating this program to new heights. We have already begun our search to identify that next leader.”

I don’t know if we need to dig deeper and think that something is wrong with the department or if this is merely a guy choosing the easier path. Could be a bit of both, but we do know that new Texas Tech assistant coach Jeff Linder (who left Wyoming as the head coach) said that it was too difficult to be a coach at a mid-major, which is maybe where Texas Tech is at this point. I won’t criticize you if you think either way. Snide was also supposedly putting together the 2nd best recruiting class in the nation. I’m not sure how to process that, just throwing it out there.

South Florida RHP Jack Cebert announced he was transferring to Texas Tech. Cebert went 7-6 with a 5.72 ERA, throwing 74 innings, striking out 61 and walking 19. I won’t pretend that I know enough about baseball transfers, but I do welcome any and all arms.
