Texas Tech Basketball | 2024-25 Eligibility Chart Version 9.0

JT Toppin is a 6’9″ forward who played his first year at New Mexico and committed and signed to Texas Tech on Tuesday. Toppin averaged 12.4 points per game, making 62% of his shots from the floor, 9.1 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.9 blocks, and 1.1 steals a game in just 26 minutes a game. In looking at Toppin’s advanced stats, his biggest weaknesses are his assist rate, just 4.2 and free throws, making 56% overall. The strengths are exactly what you think, high block rate, low turnover rate, high rebound rates, high effective field goal percentage, and high offensive rating, simply because he’s getting buckets around the rim.

In looking at the highlights, he is the absolute trash player, he picks up offensive boards and almost all of his highlights are him getting offensive boards and simply being around the rim. He’s got a decent hook shot from either side of the rim that makes it difficult to block, but I am guessing the NBA wants him to expand his game a bit and also make free throws. It almost is a situation where the NBA could have a place for a forward like Toppin, but they would definitely if he had a 3-point shot or an outside shot. He does great as a roll player on the pick and roll.

There are still two spots remaining. To remind everyone, the black blocks are years available and the red blocks are a possible redshirt year available. Each year a team has 13 scholarships and it is best to look a this on a year-by-year basis.

Apologies for missing yesterday. We were one of the people affected by the storms that ran through the DFW area on Tuesday morning. We were without power until yesterday at around 1:00 p.m. and my parents still don’t have power. Lots of trees down, like a lot of people and I spent Tuesday cleaning up as much as humanly possible. I am reading that Thursday night and Friday morning could be quite the ride as well for folks in the Dallas area again and Levelland had a helluva day yesterday or the previous night. Stay safe people and love you all.
