What a weekend. Head coach Joey McGuire’s non-transcript from after the spring game is below.
- A lot of fun. Have not done a spring in 28 or so spring games to split up the coaches, players, staff, and nutrition. Gave it some extra energy. Some big plays early and the defense continually spread to the football. I told you last week that it will be the no name defense because of the depth on the field. Came out really healthy, everyone that started finished the scrimmage. Overall the energy was great. Had a lot of families here and glad that parents got to watch their sons. Hated that we didn’t get to Midland, thankful we had an indoor facility to get the game in.
- I was really excited, had a great Thursday practice and practiced against each other. I thought there was a lotof energy. The one thing I learned, it’s players over plays and get players the ball and get them the ball early. The guys that needed early touches, Caleb Douglas, Josh Kelly, Coy [Eakin], got early touches and got the offense going.
- I thought they did a good job, early Will [Hammond] was on the mark, other than the interception, I don’t know that the ball didn’t hit the ground. You saw some times where they sped the game up when they didn’t have to and you have to step up in the pocket. In the touchdown to Coy, he would have gotten hit and he stepped up in pressure. Kirk Bryant, our offensive analysis, will give us the full spring offensive analysis. That was Hammond’s 4th interception this spring, he’s done a good job of taking care of the football. Jake [Strong] has done a good job of taking care of the football. With Cameran [Brown] who can get us going, if he gets hit, he gets going. You could see he opens up the run game and makes a big difference.
- I am anxious to see, Behren [Morton] is #1, then Cameran Brown. Need to work your tail of and doing want to play a freshman other than in 4 games. We’ve really worked on some things, I think you could see a lot of what K-State did against us with Cam at quarterback.
- Behren is really good, he would say he could go play today. We’ve got a good plan with our doctors and throwing experts. He’s been pain free after the 2nd or 3rd day of rest, we feel really good about where we are at. We wold be looking in the portal if we were concerned. We feel really good about the quarterback room, they have to grown and have to get better this summer. Cam can put it on a rope, but has to work on touch and deep balls. Jake’s bad plays are in the middle of the field. Him getting better at seeing that, and with Will he’s a freshman and getting better.
- [Young players who have had a good spring] Amier Washington is like a bull in a China shop. Should have been a huge play, caught a running back from behind. Jalon Peoples has had a good spring. Jayden Cofield had a great spring game. Braylon Rigsby. Sheridan Wilson has had a good spring and doing a great job at center and have a group of 4 or 5 guys who can play guard or center.
- [On Anquan Willis and Bryson Donnell] Same thing we did with Loic [Fouonji], who graduated as a Red Raider, which I thought was smart. Same situation of those guys giving them an opportunity, give them a choice, if they decide to move on and play in the game, that’s good for them and good for us. Once you get to those points, there are some really bad things that get into the portal, guys that don’t find homes, but there are some good things too. Guys that want to play football and looking at depth charts.
- It says a lot about a lot of things, Dylan and Amier, the Golden Triangle, they are two of the toughest young players around and seek contact, getting them settled this spring, Dylan is playing the B and Amier is playing the F and takes a lot off their plate to define their job. They played fast today. They have huge upsides and could make a name for themselves. They are physical and seek contact.
- Cameron Dickey is 219, he does a good job in pass-pro, has good hands coming out of the backfield. He has really good vision. He played quarterback in high school and you never know what’s going to come out of that. He reminds me a lot of Tahj, doesn’t talk a lot and tries to get better. Good combination of Tahj, Cam’Ron Valdez, he had a huge blitz pickup, and add Ja’Kobe Williams who has one of the fastest hurdle times in the country. We’re going to add him and feel good about them.
- [On the new timeout at the 2 minute warning and helmet communications] I know there’s of why we have the 2 minute warning. The way I look at it, they’ve built in the TV timeouts which they are going to get in. And allows you to have a timeout to use earlier. Very frustrated about the helmet communication and had the perfect time to get it right, [NCAA] chose the easy way out, chose to do it like the NFL, we don’t huddle and as a result we are going to have to signal playing the majority of college football. The whole point to do this so you don’t have to signal, the momentum was moving towards that. My frustration, have literally called everyone on the committee and we went into the bowl game and we did not signal 1 time on the defensive side of the ball and chose to do the same thing with the offensive side of the ball and think they fumbled that. We had a chance to change the game and think they choose the easy way out. Hopefully they revisit it, not having a lot of teams huddle, there are so many personnel packages, more people playing and depth. The other thing we did, we just put more stuff on the officials. Can’t have 2 green dots on the field and the officials have to call a penalty and now equipment guys have to have 2 different helmets. Why do it that way in the bowl game and it worked great.
- Reese Burkhardt’s field goals, what an awesome thing to have, he’s had a really good spring. That’s how he’s kicked all spring and proud of the way he’s come back. He’s worked his tail off and will be interesting all camp, Gino Garcia makes you feel good because he’s done it during games. I can’t look these guys in the eye and tell them that we’re not taking that competition on the field.
- Feedback was that the NFL does it that way, and anytime they go hurry up, it changes and they have to signal. Same thing worked when we played against Cal and Neal Brown said that it worked for them too. It was almost to get it passed, but what happened this fall did happen we had a huge push to change this and to use that momentum to use it right. Going to be interesting to see who gets penalties, talked to Will Muschamp and said that we’re going to go faster, if you’re going to talk to your middle linebacker and then we’ve defeated the purpose of even having it.
Here are a couple of extra videos, the CJ Baskerville and Caleb Douglas after the spring game as well as Joseph Plunk mic’d up.
Last week, Texas Tech had two commits and Red Raider Sports’ Ben Golan spoke to both of them, Louisiana DT Dylan Singleton and Gladewater athlete Colt Sparks. At the time they committed, I don’t know that any of the services had talked to them after their commitment, but now they have.
Since this is a football notebook, we don’t have a ton of time to get into baseball, but Texas Tech baseball did sweep West Virginia over the weekend, a a 15-2win on Friday night and then winning a double-header on Sunday, a 6-4 win in the 1st game and a 3-1 win in the 2nd game. As up and down as Texas Tech baseball has been, they sit 5th in the conference with series against Kansas, Oklahoma, and then Oklahoma State. Kansas is right behind Texas Tech in the standings and OU and OSU are above Texas Tech at 1st and tied for 2nd.
