Texas Tech Baseball

Texas Tech baseball had a busy couple of days, beating UT Arlington on Tuesday, 13-1 and then falling to No. 7 Oregon State, 10-4 yesterday. They will debut at Dan Law Field starting on Friday for a 3-game set with Texas Southern.

Lady Raider Basketball

The Lady Raiders fell to Texas in Austin last night, 77-72, led by Jasmine Shavers who scored 27 and Bailey Maupin who scored 22. That’s a much better effort than the loss to Baylor and this team is very short-handed. The Lady Raiders will host Cincinnati on Saturday with tip-off at 2:00 p.m.

24/7 Sports has a list of freshmen that should see playing time this fall and one Micah Hudson makes the list:

Hudson is the top-ranked recruit in Red Raiders history and enters a Texas Tech receiving room that must replace three of its top four contributors from the 2023 season. Hudson can line up anywhere on the field — outside or in the slot — and is dynamic with the ball in his hands.

Expect the Red Raiders to get the ball to him plenty in Year 1.

24/7 Sports’ Carter Bahns with the most impactful super seniors for 2024 and first up on the list is Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks:

Only three FBS players averaged more rushing yards per game than Tahj Brooks last season. Texas Tech’s star ballcarrier turned 290 touches into 1,538 yards and 10 scores during a breakout campaign, and he elected to utilize his fifth year of eligibility — granted during the pandemic — to return in 2024. The Red Raiders are among the numerous teams seeking to establish themselves as frontrunners in the new-look Big 12, and Brooks’ production will aid in that effort.

Red Raider Sports’ Julio Gonzales, Jr. has his weekly recruiting 6-pack and I wanted to focus on the two basketball offers to Alex Barther (6-5/188 | 2026) and Leon Horner, III (6-6/195 | 2024 class). Both of these players play for Southern Assault and after having Youssouf play on a club team I know a bit more about how this all works. Southern Assault is an Adidas sponsored club and you normally work your way up to getting to play Southern Assault. There are a handful of circuits that are based on shoe brands, there is a Nike circuit, Adidas, Under Armour, and Puma (there may be others, but these are the main ones that you aspire to play for). A team like Southern Assault pays for everything, and I mean everything. Basically the parent is in charge of dropping off your kid and then a bus or plane takes the player to whatever tournament they are supposed to go to. Food, clothing, shelter, etc. are all paid for while they are with Southern Assault. There’s a lot more that happens, but that’s a decent summary. Normally, kids that play for any of the teams that is on a major circuit are really good and almost always a Division I player. Youssouf is on an Under Armour and Puma team (two separate teams) right now and we’re not at the point where anything is paid for (which is fine!).
