Texas Tech Football: Offensive Line Coach Stephen Hamby Terminated

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reports that offensive line coach Stephen Hamby was terminated on Monday. Just typing that is weird and odd and this certainly feels like odd timing at best. Williams’ article notes that Hamby was in the middle part of a two-year deal and that he’ll receive 70% of $330,000 as he was terminated without cause.

A Tech athletics spokesman said Hamby was terminated without cause. Under the terms of Hamby’s contract, Tech must pay him 70 percent of the remaining value of the deal in monthly installments, beginning a month from the termination date. The buyout obligation, however, is reduced dollar-for-dollar by Hamby’s earnings from any subsequent job during the term of the contract, which runs through Jan. 31, 2025.

I’m not a subscriber to any of the pay sites so I don’t have a clue who is being looked at as a possible replacement, still sort of feels like a bit of a surprise. I am grateful that there’s not a reason that they are firing him for cause, which would make things uncomfortable and probably a lawsuit. That’s not to say that firing your offensive line coach in February is ideal, but you get the idea.
