Not Texas Tech news, but Nick Saban retires from Alabama. For me, he’s the best that’s ever coached college football and took a program that was just like any other program, i.e. sorta like Auburn right now, and then quieted the boosters and won national titles on a regular basis and was in the conversation almost every year. And he might have also created Alabama to the point that the SEC became what we know of as the SEC today because every SEC program needed to keep up with Alabama. I also hate/love coaching searches and Saban retiring is about to set off enough waves of coaches going and leaving to cause headaches for all sorts of people/bloggers. The good thing is that fans cannot get enough of coaching rumors. It is insatiable. Then add in Harbaugh possibly leaving for the NFL and you’ve got a National Champion coach leaving and maybe two of the biggest spots to fill in college football.
The Lady Raiders fell to Oklahoma State last night in Stillwater, 71-58, the biggest problem was the first quarter where they only managed 4 points and could never battle back after that. Shavers led the team with 17 and Maupin had 16. They travel to Norman to take on Oklahoma on Saturday.
The Texas Tech student-athletes had a 3.359 GPA this past semester, which is the highest on record. Congrats to all, including support staff!
CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish ranks teams every day, yes every day, and yesterday he had Texas Tech at No. 25. And in Big 12 action, No. 3 Kansas lost to UCF in Orlando and No. 10 Oklahoma lost to TCU in Ft. Worth. It is incredibly difficult to win on the road in the Big 12 (or anywhere).
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reported that defensive lineman Brock Burris is transferring as a graduate transfer and offensive lineman Jacoby Jackson is transferring to Mississippi State. I could also swear that I read somewhere that linebacker Jessiah Pierre is transferring to UCF. I don’t think that UCF is on the Big 12 football matrix (PDF) for 2024. If you are curious who is, the home games are Arizona, TCU, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State, while the away games are Arizona State, Colorado, Baylor, and Cincinnati.
