Post-Game Thoughts: Texas Tech 76, Vanderbilt 54

Game Links:

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Let’s see if we can keep Pop Isaacs rolling, leading the team with 19 points, 6 of 16 from the field including 3 of 7 from deep, 7 assists, 1 steal and just 1 turnover.

The Motion:

  • I didn’t get to watch the game at all, so these are just box score observations on my end of things. Regardless as to watching or not, a 20-point win when the advanced stats said that a 9-point win is pretty good.
  • Texas Tech just played better, but Vanderbilt has a terrible defense and in watching some highlights, it showed. Just missed coverages and easy shots. Texas Tech shot 49% overall, 56% from beyond the arc and 88% from the free throw line.
  • Vandy meanwhile shot 36% overall, 20% from deep and 53% from the free throw line. They were all kinds out of sorts.
  • The offensive rebounding was pretty even, but Texas Tech held an 11 rebound advantage over Vanderbilt on the defensive boards.
  • 22 assists for Texas Tech is a good number and with 12 turnovers, 8 of those coming in the 2nd half where Texas Tech appeared to be rolling offensively, not too shabby.
  • Texas Tech won this game with 6 minutes remaining and getting double-figure box plus/minus from Kerwin Walton and Chance McMillian is a sure sign of success. Again, game over with 6 minutes left. Crazy.
  • Walton is playing unbelievably efficient basketball. Last night 12 points, 4 of 5 from the field, making both 3-point buckets, 4 boards, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. McMillian isn’t far behind for at least one game 14 points, 5 of 9 from the field and 2 of 3 from deep with 3 steals.
  • Joe Toussaint really sort of always finds a way, 12 points on 5 shots, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, but also 4 turnovers.
  • Head coach Grant McCasland: “It was a remarkable crowd with the Red Raiders in full force in Dickies Arena.  It was a home game for us with the energy of the crowd. We have a lot of respect for Vanderbilt, especially how they execute on offense. They run a lot of actions and haven’t been playing with their full team together. I was concerned at halftime because of our energy, but was thrilled with how our guys competed in the second half. I thought we played great defense for 40 minutes. We were able to separate after a great start. It was a great win for us.”
  • Up next? December 21st at 1:00 pm, Texas Tech will host UT-Arlington at the United Supermarkets Arena.
