Starting 5

1. Stats. If the Texas Tech starters don’t max out their minutes at 25 there are problems because this should be a blowout. The Mavericks are are not a good offensive team, a terrible 2-point shooting team, 306th overall, 283rd in offensive rebounding rate, and 209th in 3-point shooting. The only thing that keeps them in games is that they get to the line, 52nd in the nation. Defensively, things are worse. They are essentially a sieve inside the arc, 353rd overall, and they can’t block a shot to save their lives, 341st overall. Omaha is fairly adept at guarding the 3-point line, 85th in the nation.

2. Scouting. Fidler is quite good and should be fun to watch. High offensive rating and low turnover percentage. He’s one of the guys who gets to the line and makes them, he’s also a very good 3-point shooter, 47%, but he hasn’t take a ton of attempts, just 17. White is also okay offensively, he’s just not an outside shooter, while Osburn really just shoots from deep, only 5 2-point shots on the year. They are all low-turnover guys, so expect a lot of ball control.

3. How They Match Up. The one thing that Omaha is good at offensively, getting to the line, is one of the things that Texas Tech is good at defensively, 50th in the nation. Given that Omaha is on the road, I think this could be a long day for the Mavericks. Texas Tech has improved offensively over the course of a couple of weeks and I would expect some defensive adjustments too. I think that McCasland prides himself on being a good defensive team.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Tech is currently 5-2 on the season after dropping an overtime decision at Butler last Thursday at Hinkle Fieldhouse, while Omaha (5-4) is on a three-game winning streak after a win over Bellevue last Thursday. Tech senior Chance McMillian led the Red Raiders with 24 points as a reserve after going off for eight 3-pointers against the Bulldogs, while four other players also scored in double figures with Pop Isaacs (18), Joe Toussaint (18), Devan Cambridge (16), and Warren Washington (10). It was the first game this season with five double-figure scorers. Toussaint recorded the third Texas Tech double-double this season by also having a career-high 12 assists to go along with his scoring and currently leads the Red Raiders with 15.0 points and 4.3 assists per game. McMillian was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday for his performance at Butler to secure the first weekly award for the team.

“We have a great opportunity being back home after playing on the road quite a bit recently,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “I feel like our team has improved in a lot of areas with some growth. We still have to get better in areas but it’ll be great to be back in the USA. I have a lot of respect for Omaha and Coach Crutchfield who has them super aggressive.”
