Texas Tech cross-country participated in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday as the men finished 5th overall and the women finished 9th. Juliet Cheribet was 3rd overall and Gideon Kiplimo finished 12th for the men. Cheribet was 1 second off of 2nd place and Kiplimo had a PR of 23:12.70. The regional tournament is in Lubbock on November 10th.
Texas Tech defeated Texas A&M in the exhibition in Denton yesterday afternoon, 89-84. This game doesn’t mean anything other than it appears that this team will be able to compete on some level with talented teams, TAMU having a very good team, preseason ranked No. 15, and the SEC preseason player of the year in Wade Taylor IV. You can check out the box score and aside from winning, the biggest takeaway is the pace, scoring 89 points is something that a lot of people have said that Grant McCasland would never do, which is play at a faster pace. Texas Tech had 28 fast break points, which is a ton. A normal amount in a college game is 6 to 10 or so. Texas Tech did give up 23 2nd chance points and TAMU had 17 offensive boards, so there’s plenty to clean up and focus on.
Before the season I was curious about what would happen if Warren Washington couldn’t play and well, he had 5 fouls and played only 21 minutes. Without a true big man, Texas Tech played a rotation of Darrion Williams, Pop Isaacs, Joe Toussaint, Devan Cambridge, Lamar Washington, and Chance McMillan. Isaacs had 30 points, Cambridge had 14, Washington had 13, and McMillan had 17. The season starts for real on November 8th, hosting Texas A&M-Commerce.
