They will have their toughest competition of the season as they will travel to Provo to take on highly-ranked BYU on Thursday, October 5th, and then head back home to host TCU on Sunday, October 8th.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese has 5 observations from Saturday’s game:
Third downs continue to be a problem for the Tech defense
Getting off the field on third down has been an issue for the Texas Tech defense throughout the 2023 season. Teams entered Saturday’s game converting just under 40% of their third-down conversions. That number was much higher for Houston.Much of the Cougars’ success came on third down, the team converting eight of its first nine attempts, twice for touchdowns. They finished the game 10 of 16 on the penultimate down. Two of the first three times Tech held on third down, it led to touchdowns (once on Fouonji’s blocked punt return).
This improved in the second half, though, which was part of our next observation.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams has his weekly Q&A and the first question is about redshirts and where those players are currently:
First, the obligatory mention that a player who’s not previously redshirted can do so by playing in no more than four games in a season. Tech coach Joey McGuire has said since the end of spring that star safety Brenden Jordan and inside linebacker Mike Dingle were unlikely to redshirt, and Jordan is already past the four-game limit.
Free safety Chapman Lewis and boundary safety Jordan Sanford are now at the four-game maximum, so it’ll be interesting to see what’s decided on those two. If starting free safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson has to miss a game for injury, the decision on Lewis could be made for the Red Raiders. I tend to think Lewis is not going to redshirt anyway, given that he’s been a second-team player for months and is on kickoff coverage as well. In the latter role, he made a tackle at the 13-yard line Saturday.
Inside The Red Raiders’ Joe Yeager and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese have some observations from the first Grant McCasland presser and open practice.
