Starting 5

1. Stats. A quick turnaround for both teams, but Iowa State has to travel, which should be an advantage to Texas Tech. Iowa State lost to Missouri in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, which is interesting. Iowa State is still pretty much the same team that we saw a few weeks ago, they are a good shooting team 69th in eFG%, an absolutely terrific offensive rebounding team, 20th in the nation and they fall short because they are 319th in free throw rate and 308th in free throw percentage made. Defensively, they are similar in that they are 321st in putting opposing teams on the line, but they are 1st in turnover percentage, which makes them a top-10 defense in the nation. All of the other figures are good, but that turnover rate is a huge deal.

2. Scouting. Grill must be hurt, he didn’t play against Missouri and that shortened their bench by quite a bit, he was playing 70% of 40 possible minutes. There isn’t a stand-out shooter, but Kalscheur and Holmes shoot well. Lipsey doesn’t shoot well from deep at all, but is a high-assist guy that feeds his teammates. ISU is very good inside the arc, Osunnyi, Lipsey, and King all shoot well inside. Last time out Kalscheur was absolutely dialed in and he probably needs special attention.

3. How They Match Up. In a normal world, Texas Tech doesn’t come close to winning this game, but this Big 12 is not a normal world. Grill is much more important and is part of that guard rotation that was so good the last time these two teams met, Grill scored 14 including 4 of 8 from deep . Honestly, Texas Tech needs to do more of what happened against LSU, which is get Tyson, Obanor, and Walton some good looks from deep and let the others cook in other ways. I’m presuming that Aimaq and Isaacs aren’t playing, but think they are day-to-day.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

A pair of Sweet 16 programs from last season will meet for the second time this year when Texas Tech hosts No. 12 Iowa State at 8 p.m. on Monday at the United Supermarkets Arena. Kevin Obanor enters the matchup with 1,998 points and 1,020 rebounds in his career – just two points from reaching the rare milestone of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds that only two other active players have achieved and 125 total according to the NCAA Record Book.

The Red Raiders (11-10, 0-8 Big 12) are coming off a 76-68 road win over LSU on Saturday in the Big 12-SEC Challenge, while the Cyclones (15-5, 6-2 Big 12) took a 78-61 loss at Missouri after an 80-76 win over No. 5 Kansas State last Tuesday in conference play. Tech, which is 0-7 against ranked opponents, has lost eight straight Big 12 games for the first time since starting the 2012 conference slate at 0-11 and looks to respond from an 84-50 loss at Iowa State on January 10 in the first matchup between the two teams. The Cyclones enter the week tied atop the Big 12 standings with Kansas State and Texas with their 6-2 conference records.
