Starting 5

1. Stats. Another (and last) not so good or downright terrible team. SCST is 333rd in the nation in 3-point shooting and 301st in 2-point shots. The whole point of basketball is to shoot well and they do not do that. They are decent at turnover percentage, 87th, and offensive rebounding percentage, 94th, but they do not shoot well by any metric. Defensively, the Bulldogs are 296th in 2-point shooting defense and 358th in 3-point shooting defense, which means they neither shoot well or guard teams that shoot the ball.

2. Scouting. The Bulldogs won 2 games, East Carolina, which they did so by rebounding the heck out of the ball and getting to the free throw line, and also shooting decently from outside, 9 of 19, and then beat Samford by not turning the ball over and rebounding the hell out of the ball. That’s where you start. Brown and Hallums (who did not play the last game, but is a 6’2″ guard) are the teams only decent shooters from outside, Gary takes a bunch of shots, but only makes 31%. James does a good job of blocking shots as does Wilson and as a whole, the entire team does a really good job of not running the ball over. No one is particularly a high-assist player, so not a ton of sharing the ball.

3. How They Match Up. Last tune-up before hitting the road against TCU and T-Rank is predicting a 25-point win. Looking at Texas Tech’s T-Rank, you get a sense that Harmon should not shoot from outside, he’s 6 of 24 from deep, but really good in so many other ways. It feels as if the team took a turn offensively the last two games, which is difficult to state because the competition wasn’t great at all, thus it is difficult to judge. Regardless, the turnover percentage the last 3 games has been good to very good, the eFG% was over 65% for the last 2 games, and had clean shots.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

With the start of Big 12 play looming, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team will host South Carolina State on Tuesday at the United Supermarkets Arena to begin a week that will culminate by playing at No. 20 TCU on Saturday in Fort Worth. The Red Raiders are currently on an overall 28-game home winning streak with a 7-0 home record this season.

Tech (9-2) is coming off an 111-67 win over Houston Christian last Wednesday while the Bulldogs (2-12) dropped a 104-77 game to Longwood in their last game. The Red Raiders led the all-time series 1-0 with the only other matchup resulting in a 101-39 win by Tech on December 17, 2014.
