Things

I think this is a pretty seismic move and that’s coming from someone that is not a subscriber to Red Raider Sports or regularly listen to Double T 97.3, largely because I just don’t listen to anything at work and I’ve always been too cheap to subscribe to anything. Regardless as to my personal habits, Chris Level moving away from the radio is a big deal. I don’t think there is anyone more connected than Level in terms of Texas Tech athletics and it’s probably not close (And that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t get to read what he posts on RRS.). From what I understand, Chris will continue to post on RRS and as his Tweet states, he’ll still be on the radio for Texas Tech games, doing color for men’s basketball and sideline reporting for football.

I get moving on to a more stable job with benefits and an easier life (I chose the same thing recently) so without a doubt, this makes sense to me. Good luck to Chris!

Lady Raider Basketball

Texas Tech and Krista Gerlich announced that the top-rated junior college player, Emilia Nworie (6’5″) has signed a letter of intent and will be eligible for Texas Tech starting this next year. Nworie is originally from Nigeria and averaged 12.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks last year for the College of Southern Idaho and was the highest rated junior college recruit.

As I said about the new softball hire, I just don’t have time to cover everything, but this seemed worth mentioning. I have no idea how Gerlich’s roster will play out and know that she’s probably needed an infusion of talent and I have no idea where the scoring will come from with Vivian Gray having moved on. Every year is important, but this seems like a big year.

Football

24/7 Sports has the top transfer for every Power 5 program, organized by conference. Again, I find this useful to know who is where when the season starts. There’s definitely part of me that thinks that LB Dimitri Moore will have a bigger impact as he’s at a position that was wiped out by graduation and he was here all spring to learn the defense and be part of the team. Here’s a quick rundown:

Baylor: DL Jaxon Player (Tulsa)
Iowa State: LB Colby Reeder (Delaware)
Kansas: DB Marvin Grant (Purdue)
Kansas State: QB Adrian Martinez (Nebraska)
Oklahoma: QB Dillon Gabriel (UCF)
Oklahoma State: OL Jason Brooks (Vanderbilt)
TCU: RB Corey Wren (Florida State)
Texas: QB Quinn Ewers (Ohio State)
Texas Tech: TE Baylor Cupp (Texas A&M)
West Virginia: QB JT Daniels (USC)

Texas Tech — Baylor Cupp, TE: One of the highest-rated tight ends in 247Sports’ history, Cupp’s career at Texas A&M never came to fruition as he battled through frustrating injury issues. He never could crack a meaningful rotation and saw others pass him up. At his best, though, Cupp is a dominant blocker that is more than capable of giving defenses fits with his ability as a receiver.
