RedRaiderSports’ Matt Clare spoke with Smith about his commitment:
“I have been talking with Coach Blanchard for a while now. We talk almost every day. Coach McGuire came to our school late last year and told my coaches that he liked my build. It was shortly after he took the job at Texas Tech, and then they offered me a day after my birthday on the 17th of November. It was awesome.
“The coaches talked about how they loved my film, how I know the game well and how I play big for my size. We have talked a lot and once Coach McGuire got his entire staff in place, I was excited because he brought in Coach (Zach) Kittley. I’m a big fan of his offense and how he throws the ball around.”
We do have a bit of video from Smith and Texas Tech commit quarterback Jake Strong competing on 7-on-7 as well as his end-of-season highlights.

From Smith’s 24/7 Sports profile that Smith ran the ball 8 times for 96 yards and a touchdown as well as catching 35 passes for 475 yards and 6 touchdowns. Smith is a big-bodied receiver that catches the ball really well in traffic and is very much like a running back dressed up as a receiver. Very strong and does a really nice job of going up and getting the ball. Sort of a Baylor type of offense with the wide receiver splits and that gives the quarterback the green light to just throw the ball up to Smith a handful of times and he does a nice job of making a play on the ball.
