Starting 5

1. Stats. Was a little surprised that MSU was so good on offense, but we’ll get to why in a second. They are a very good shooting team, 42nd in 2-point shooting and an abysmal 220th in the nation in 3-point shooting. Regardless of the bad shooting from the outside, they are still 67th in eFG%. They are an excellent offensive rebounding team, 17th in the nation, and 49th in getting to the free throw line. Defensively, they have their flaws, but are still good. They are 185th in eFG% allowed and 199th in defending the 3-point shot, but they are good at limiting offensive boards, 35th in the nation, and 45th in block percentage.

2. Scouting. A big part of the reason for the success is the scoring of Molinar, who scores really from anywhere inside the arc. Outside, he’s shooting 29%, which isn’t bad, but not great. Moore is another good shooter and Brooks and Jeffries will launch it from deep with decent success. Brooks, Matthews, and Garcia are the heavy lifters in terms of rebounds, while just about everyone on the team will steal the ball. Mississippi State is without Tolu Smith (6-11) and he was kind of a unicorn in that he did so much for them. I think he’s injured and that’s a pretty big blow.

3. How They Match Up. Texas Tech should have a pretty distinct advantage. Mississippi State is on the road, an unfamiliar foe and unfamiliar defense, and their defense isn’t as good as you’d maybe like. And I respect the heck out of Ben Howland, he completely flamed out at UCLA and has done a very good job at Mississippi State, a place that can be tough to recruit to and he was a West Coast guy, but they’ve got good players. A lot of what Texas Tech needs to do is get McCullar and Shannon on track to an extent. Again, I’ll emphasize that I think the three-point shots are fine, but in moderation and they would be better off trying to work inside out.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

No. 13 Texas Tech ventures outside conference play to host Mississippi State at 5 p.m. on Saturday in a Big 12/SEC Challenge matchup at the United Supermarkets Arena.

The Red Raiders (15-5, 5-3 Big 12) are 5-3 all-time in the crossover event after a win at LSU, while the Bulldogs (13-6, 4-3 SEC) are 1-2 in the challenge after a victory over Iowa State in last year’s games. Tech is coming off a 94-91 double-overtime loss at No. 5 Kansas on Monday night and MSU took an overtime loss at No. 12 Kentucky on Tuesday in games leading into this weekend.
