Starting 5

1. Stats. Not a ton of data for Grambling State, but they are not very good, having lost to Grand Canyon by 20 or so points. Not that Grand Canyon is bad, but GSU has struggled with their program for quite some time. Not a great shooting team, maybe their best trait is getting to the free throw line offensively and on defense it would be forcing turnovers, so maybe expect some on-ball pressure

2. Scouting. As I’ve stated I take the prior game’s starting five and this is a weird starting five for GSU. Munford is the best player, a guard that didn’t shoot a ton of three’s the last game, but has a really nice assist and rebounding rate. Morton is also a good rebounder and has a good assist rate. Not surprisingly, Lamin is a good rebounder, but once it goes to him, it’s not going out. We talked the first game about Wins above Replacement and if Texas Tech wins, that would be a change of .05, which means that statistically, winning this game does very little to help Texas Tech’s tournament resume. The opposite would be true for GSU.

3. How They Match Up. Texas Tech has a bunch of not-great teams on their non-conference schedule and Grambling State qualifies as one of them. Texas Tech should have a clear advantage on both ends of the court. A couple of interesting notes is that Williams and Obanor for Texas Tech are most likely going to be blackholes in terms of shooting the ball. That’s probably going to be just fine, but they most likely won’t be passing up a ton of shots. Warren was fantastic offensively, from passing to shooting, he was fantastic.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech will host Grambling in a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup on Friday at the United Supermarkets Arena after a 15-point win over North Florida to begin the week and season.

The Red Raiders (1-0) are 3-0 all-time against Grambling (0-1) with an 81-40 win over the Tigers last season in a Dec. 6, 2020 contest. The second game of a three-game home stand for Tech to begin the season will be streamed on ESPN+. The Tigers arrive in Lubbock after taking a 74-53 loss against Grand Canyon on Tuesday in Arizona.
