This is always a tough thing to source. I don’t have a subscription anywhere, but have been told that RedRaiderSports was maybe the first to confirm on their message boards and has been subsequently confirmed by Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams and Carlos Silva, Jr. that Baylor associate head coach and linebacker coach Joey McGuire will be the 17th head coach at Texas Tech.
This news was also confirmed by news outlets in the DFW area.
As we reported tonight on CBS 11 Sports, sources say Texas Tech will name Baylor AHC Joey McGuire as Head Football Coach. McGuire helped rebuild Baylor the past 5 years under Matt Ruhle & Dave Aranda & won 3 state titles in 14 years at Cedar Hill HS…great hire by Kirby Hocutt!

Love the Joey McGuire hire by Texas Tech. He built Cedar Hill into a power, and then helped build Baylor back up.
And the #1 reason why is that kids absolutely love him. Love playing for him, love being in his orbit.
Really intrigued to see what he can do with Tech.

McGuire was the long-time head coach at Cedar Hill where he was 141-42, won three state championships and was hired from Cedar Hill by Matt Rhule at Baylor. When Rhule left for the Carolina Panthers, current head coach Dave Aranda retained McGuire on the Baylor staff.
McGuire is said to be a person who has terrific personal skills in addition to being a fantastic recruiter. I’ve mentioned that McGuire and Baylor did a better job of recruiting West Texas than Texas Tech did and I firmly believe that. Although I have no specifics in terms of names, it is my understanding that McGuire’s staff will have significant ties to recruiting and I believe the days of having sub-par recruiting classes will be something that McGuire will remedy.
