Winthrop Forward Adonis Arms to Transfer to Texas Tech

How about that name? Adonis Arms. That’s all-conference right there. Adonis Arms is a 6’6″ and 205 pound wing from Winthrop where he averaged just 17 minutes, but produced 10.5 points, shot 41% from the floor, 35% from the three-point line, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and over 4 turnovers (yikes). Arms had spent time at Mesa Community College and was the MVP in 2016-17, transferred to Northwest Nazarene University where he was the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and then sat out the 2019-20 season because of the transfer to Winthrop.

According to T-Rank, Arms is a high usage player, meaning he has the ball in his hands a lot, played 40% of the minutes for Winthrop, was a terrific rebounder and had a high steal rate for the limited minutes he played. Not a particularly good shooter, and his turnovers numbers don’t appear to be terrible, statistically.

If you’re asking me, this is a Terrence Shannon, Jr. replacement and even if Shannon returns, Texas Tech is needs wings in a bad way because the style of defense that Texas Tech will play isn’t going to change and long-armed and athletic wings who can guard are incredibly important to Adams and Arms has that in spades.

Arms is a nice player, but these highlights obviously don’t show any misses. Of all things Arms was 9 of 13 on dunks last year, which isn’t good. Arms handles the ball a ton and seems really comfortable with the ball in his hands, he has nice vision offensively and has a nice idea of spacing. I like Arms’ shot, he just needs to make more.

Let’s get to that all-important eligibility chart. I think that Arms is going to be a graduate senior and I’ve changed up the chart a bit to acknowledge the seasons potentially available if McClung or Shannon return.
