Texas Tech Adds Transfer Defensive Back

This happened on Friday and I’m sort of catching up. North Carolina defensive back Malik Dunlap (6-3/216) announced that he would transferring to Texas Tech.

RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan briefly spoke with Dunlap about his decision to transfer and it was his relationship with secondary coach Derek Jones:

MD: “I’ve been talking to coach Derek Jones. He recruited me out of high school and we had a good relationship then, too.”

According to Dunlap’s page at NC State, he played the last 2 years, was the #35 prospect in North Carolina coming out of high school, had 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and 7 pass break-ups.

I am most impressed by Dunlap’s size, which would work out well in that safety/linebacker position, but with the 7 pass break-ups in limited action, that’s pretty impressive.

I’d also like to add that Texas Tech has, what I think, are two preferred walk-on’s in Regents School of Austin offensive lineman Jacob Votaw (6-5/270) and Elite Sports Prep defensive end Bobby Young (6-5/225). I haven’t looked up the ratings of either player, usually it’s a two-star or so, maybe not even rated all, but these are likely preferred walk-ons. If you want to read about young, RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan talked to Young.
